German Timepiece. Seasons and Places is the debut recording for German-born pianist Florian Ross. Ross decided on a tenor-trombone fronting the traditional rhythm section. The overall effect is one of unpretentious good humor and humble swing. Ross' writing is at once angular and straight ahead. He and his band perform with a controlled abandon that is very appealing. The opening title, “By Any Means Necessary" is a good omen for what is to come on the remainder of the disc. ...
