Strani e talvolta spiazzanti i meccanismi di riscoperta e santificazione nelle musiche di oggi.

Che Arthur Russell [morto nei primi anni Novanta, senza poter godere la lunga onda di reflusso indie che ancora lambisce spumeggiante un mercato discografico sempre più specializzato] sia stato un musicista/produttore fantastico e innovativo è fuori discussione.

E lo testimoniano diverse raccolte e ristampe delle tante sfaccettature della sua carriera, tra avanguardia e disco music, mutant funk e cantautorato inafferrabile, vera e propria cartina di tornasole di un'attitudine newyorkese che avrebbe anticipato le pulsioni desideranti di molti ascoltatori del nuovo millennio.

Che poi la bulimia ristampatoria e omaggiante porti a una corretta nutrizione è piuttosto dubbio e lascia talvolta una sensazione amarognola in bocca, come quando si fa indigestione di frittelle, buonissime per carità, ma che magari è giusto gustare solo a carnevale e non tutto l'anno.

Il progetto Arthur's Landing si pone un po' sul crinale di questa ambivalenza: guidati dalla chitarra di Steven Hall, otto collaboratori storici di Russell [tra cui il grande trombonista Peter Zummo] rileggono alcuni brani - più o meno noti - della carriera del nostro eroe. Splendidamente [dal punto di vista strumentale], va da sé, scegliendo la strada di un pop/dance elettronico e evoluto, vagamente polveroso di suoni anni Ottanta e attraversato da guizzi funk sbiancati alla bisogna.

Tra cose arcinote come "Your Motion Says" e qualche inedito, il tutto scorre piacevolissimo e anche paradossalmente piuttosto trendy, ma lascia un retrogusto un po' inquieto, quasi che la "normalizzazione" delle intuizioni di Russell ne smorzi il germe di alterità che è stato e rimane un marchio di fabbrica straordinario. A volte si potrebbe beatificare anche senza troppe cerimonie.
