Westchester Jazz Orchestra: All In

Fondata e diretta da Mike Holober, la Westchester Jazz Orchestra è un ensemble di all-stars del miglior jazz newyorkese di oggi. Diciassette sono i suoi elementi, che pur mirando ad un compatto suono di gruppo, mettono anche qui in mostra diverse individualità. Dai trombettisti (Jim Rotondi, Marvin Stamm), al pianista (Ted Rosenthal), sono tutti eccellenti musicisti, motivati ad esaltare gli arrangiamenti brillanti del leader, dimostrando slancio, inventiva e vigore interpretativo. Grande mestiere e tecnica impeccabile individuale, ma non solo.

Il vero punto di forza del disco è costituito appunto dagli arrangiamenti avventurosi e mai scontati, per attraversare una vasta area di stili, che esalta un gioco di equilibrio raffinato, tra echi latinoamericani, swing e linguaggio postbop.

C’è perfino spazio per una ben riuscita, gustosa rivisitazione di un brano (“Here Comes the Sun”) dei Beatles, ma i vertici del disco si ritrovano nelle parti articolate a collage delle varie sezioni, che giganteggiano nel brano hendersoniano (“Caribbean Fire Dance”) nonché nelle riletture silveriane (“Peace”, “Room 608”).

Una musica dinamica e densa, che vive di un gioioso relax esecutivo nonché di picchi di intensità, di rifrazioni timbriche, di sfumature destrutturate. È comunque un percorso in fase di crescita, che già rivela compattezza di gruppo e brillanti arrangiamenti. Forse una incisione dal vivo sarebbe stata più pertinente e congeniale al respiro esecutivo della musica proposta, per raggiungere momenti di maggior intensità.
