Album Description

When We Were Young: The Music of Neil Young is an inspired re-working of eleven notable songs from the Neil Young catalogue. The iconic, award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist is known for his prolific body of work spanning from the mid-1960s to present day. He is considered one of the most influential musicians of his generation, and his songs have been covered by a who’s who of musicians over the years from Bob Dylan, to Johnny Cash, to Norah Jones. This new jazz-inflected album from vocalist Kelley Suttenfield (her third to date) is not a tribute album in the traditional sense, but a fresh presentation of Young’s beloved classics, as well as a few lesser-known gems. The imaginative and impressive arrangements by producer and guitarist Tosh Sheridan bring a great luminance to Young’s works, establishing a rich and varied aural landscape. The strong rhythm section comprised of Matthew Fries (piano), Phil Palombi (double bass), and Eric Halvorson (drums), is sharp and seamless. It’s worth noting that two of these three musicians are in rotation with the Curtis Stigers band, and all three together make up the modern jazz-rock trio (718). The stellar string section that shines on several selections features musicians from The Memling Ensemble, members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Finally, the heartfelt and introspective vocal delivery from Kelley Suttenfield adds a different kind of emotional intensity to Young’s cherished compositions, displaying equal parts strength and intended vulnerability. When We Were Young: The Music of Neil Young is a collection of love songs and much-loved songs. Within this adaptation, a vibrant array of moods is crafted — via melody, harmony, rhythm, and orchestration — inspiring the listener to experience anew, each story behind the music.
