Roy Campbell: Akhenaten Suite
Esercizi di egittologia sonora militante. Impossibile seguire l'astronave di Sun Ra fino alle mitiche fonti del Nilo, lassù nelle galassie, ma non c'è dubbio che Roy Campbell, da anni alla testa del Pyramid Trio, sia tra i musicisti più accreditati a rendere omaggio alla fascinazione di quella antica civiltà.

Commissionata da Arts for Art e registrata al Vision Festival del 2007, questa Akhenaten Suite vede il trombettista newyorkese affiancato dal violino di Billy Bang, dal vibrafono di Brian Carrott, dal contrabbasso solido di Hilliard Greene e dalla batteria di un vecchio sodale come Zen Matsuura. Si tratta di una strumentazione che consente al tempo stesso la compatta agilità di un quintetto free-bop e la versatilità di un ensemble cui serve una tavolozza timbrica allargata: lo stesso Campbell, oltre a tromba e flicorno, è impegnato al flauto e all'arghul della tradizione araba.

La scrittura del trombettista si muove su coordinate classiche della musica afroamericana, da una coralità quasi ellingtoniana alle suggestioni mediorientali - ma anche spagnole, come nel tema iniziale - dalla cura per il dettaglio al groove più coinvolgente. Il basso sorregge con potenti ostinati sia i momenti collettivi che quelli solisti, nei quali eccelle ovviamente Bang con il suo violinismo obliquo, ma anche Carrott fraseggia con grandissima intensità, quasi esca da uno di quei dischi della seconda metà degli anni Sessanta, ad altissima densità politica e espressiva.

La parte del leone la fa ovviamente Campbell, trombettista di rara finezza musicale, lirico e irrisolto, potente e infuocato, capace di mettere in ogni frase, non solo echi di Miles Davis o di Don Cherry, ma anche traiettorie Gil Evansiane, per un disco di imponente e classica bellezza, che forse in studio avrebbe trovato maggiore concisione, ma che respira tra le palme evocate del Nilo.
