Avishai Cohen: After the Big Rain

Ci sono due Avishai Cohen nel mondo del jazz che si rispetta. Il primo, più famoso, è il contrabbassista; l'altro, meno conosciuto, è un talentuoso trombettista di origini israeliane che ha un paio di idee niente male nella custodia della sua tromba.

Dopo il confortante esordio che risale a quattro anni fa (The Trumpet Player) il musicista ha avuto il tempo di affinare e rapportarsi alle "diversità" musicali in tanti modi. Di qua e di là ha suonato con gente come Keren Ann, Roy Hargrove, Dave Liebman, Jeff Ballard, così giusto per affinare il suo stile e sperimentare nuove strade.

Primo di una trilogia dedicata a una visionaria genesi, After the Big Rain spiega tutto il suo interesse verso madre Africa, il jazz tradizionale, non trascurando le radici e il patrimonio musicale ebreo.

Quello che ne esce fuori è un sagace quanto coinvolgente progetto timbrico e ritmico che viene valorizzato dalla voce e dalla chitarra "etnica" di Lionel Louke (la title track e la tumultuosa "Parto Forte," su tutte) e dagli altri comprimari della band (si ascoltino le deliziose note che sgorgano dal chekere, sempre nella title track e nel suo "epilogo").

Cohen con la sua tromba mistica ora scherza con l'elettronica ora si fa più introverso e davisiano come in "Afterthoughts (Mozartine)" o nella autoctona e pulviscolare "Miryama".

Altrove, le incursioni con il Fender Rhodes rimandano e certe commistioni radical-etniche e al più ispirato Manu Di Bango ("African Daisy - La Suite African").

La "grande pioggia" ha portato piacevoli sorprese.
