Dopo i tributi a Chick Corea e Wayne Shorter, l'orchestratore svedese Mats Holmquist rivolge la sua attenzione alle composizioni di Herbie Hancock, realizzando un album in collaborazione col sassofonista Dick Oatts che è principale solista nonchè co-leader.
L'incisione è dell'11 giugno 2014 ma l'idea risale all'anno precedente, con la scelta di un appropriato ensemble (comprendente nomi di prim'ordine come Walt Weiskopf, Joe Magnarelli, Adam Birnbaum più alcuni tra i migliori orchestrali statunitensi e scandinavi) e del repertorio (che include temi più o meno famosi di Hancock e una composizione di Holmquist).

I due leader non hanno bisogno di lunghe presentazioni. 56 anni, l'arrangiatore svedese ha una lunga esperienza come leader di sue orchestre jazz e sinfoniche, piccoli e medi organici. Da qualche tempo lavora impronta i suoi lavori orchestrali sulla base dei concetti minimalisti di Steve Reich. Dick Oatts è uno dei veterani delle big band di Thad Jones/Mel Lewis e di innumerevoli altre formazioni, nonchè leader di propri gruppi (con varie incisioni per la Steeplechase).

Stilisticamente legato ai concetti del modern mainstream orchestrale, Holmquist rilegge le composizioni di Hancock con arrangiamenti agili ed elastici, che esaltano la componente ritmica puntando sulla relazione solisti/collettivo. Anche se continua a ispirarsi ai concetti minimalisti di Reich (ad esempio in "Chameleon") l'arrangiatore non tradisce la lezione di Thad Jones con una scrittura comunque sofisticata, caratterizzata da una variopinta tavolozza timbrica, metri inconsueti e gusto per i contrasti. L'orchestra esegue con calore e partecipazione offrendo ai solisti un substrato in pulsante movimento, che risulta coinvolgente anche se resta nel quadro di un'estetica codificata.
