Ernie Watts: A Simple Truth
In una carriera professionale di quasi mezzo secolo (iniziò nella metà degli anni sessanta con Buddy Rich) gran parte del lavoro di Ernie Watts è stato svolto negli studi di registrazione partecipando a centinaia d'incisioni (anche di Marvin Gaye, Frank Zappa, Chaka Khan, Barbra Streisand etc...). Le sue credenziali jazz si sono sviluppate nei ranghi delle big band di Oliver Nelson e Gerald Wilson e poi nell'affermato Quartet West di Charlie Haden.

Alla soglia dei settant'anni, Ernie Watts realizza un disco intenso e creativo, rivelando l'autorevolezza del grande narratore ed evidenziando un sound avvincente, che non ha nulla da invidiare a Charles Lloyd. Uno dei suoi primi modelli è stato Ben Webster ma negli anni il suo stile ha perso corposità privilegiando maggior chiarezza anche se ha conservato il toccante lirismo.

Quest'incisione realizzata col suo quartetto europeo, mette in piena luce il suo cantabile solismo, che eccelle nelle ballad con quel controllo del suono e quel gusto per le sfumature che caratterizza i grandi protagonisti del sax tenore.
Tra i momenti più intensi abbiamo le ballad "No Lonely Nights" di Keith Jarrett (con un'esemplare sua lunga introduzione in rubato) e "Hope in the Face of Despair" di Billy Childs e il serrato "Bebop" di Dizzy Gillespie.

Un disco particolarmente riuscito dove hanno modo di spiccare le ottime doti solistiche del pianista Christof Saenger e del contrabassista Rudi Engel. Il primo e l'ultimo brano vedono il sassofonista improvvisare avvolto da una suggestiva orchestrazione sintetizzata.
