Harvey Sorgen - Steve Rust - Michael Jefry Stevens Trio: A Scent in Motion

Un grande trio per un grande disco, per capire come le leggi della visibilità siano spesso separate dal merito. Nell'insipienza generale del mercato discografico è scandaloso che una notevole seduta d'incisione del 1994 trovi solo ora la sua collocazione discografica. Un plauso grande alla Konnex, per averla riportata alla luce, dopo 15 anni di oblio. La informa il linguaggio maturo ed incisivo del leader e che conserva ancora intatta la propria vitalità. Non ancora riconosciuto per il suo valore, Stevens si conferma un creativo epigono del miglior Andrew Hill. Lo attesta un dominio totale di una materia a dir poco volatile e scoppiettante, che il suo trio scompone con fantastiche capacità analitiche ed espressive.

Tra un linguaggio d'avanguardia ("CPAC," "Freedom of Choice") e muscolari digressioni di matrice rock, Stevens padroneggia con scioltezza tecnica una materia sonora cangiante, dimostrando di essere già nel '94 uno dei migliori pianisti della scena jazz.

La formula del trio è forse quella a lui più congeniale, per esprimere le molte aperture stilistiche e giocare con la dimensione aritmicamente incisiva, armonicamente asimmetrica della sua arte. Notevoli anche i due compagni di viaggi, per completare un trio che avrebbe meritato ben altre fortune ed attenzione. Sono i protagonisti di un percorso ricco di digressioni eccentriche, con frasi suadenti e repentini colpi d'ala.
