Vienna Art Orchestra: A Notion in Perpetual Motion
Tra le big band che hanno cercato, negli ultimi decenni, di esplorare territori espressivi i cui confini risultassero sempre mobili senza perdere di fascino e solidità, la Vienna Art Orchestra di Mathias Rüegg è certamente una delle più rappresentative.

La Hatology ristampa nuovamente A Notion In Perpetual Motion e l'occasione è propizia per riavvicinarsi alla musica dell'orchestra austriaca, registrata qui dal vivo nel maggio del 1985. La formazione, ben sedici elementi, possiede le caratteristiche tipiche delle formazioni di Rüegg, con una strumentazione equilibrata e flessibile, nella quale alle sezioni di ottoni e ance si aggiungono la voce di Lauren Newton e una sezione ritmica integrata da marimba, vibrafono e tastiere.

Nelle note di copertina che accompagnano il CD, Art Lange si chiede se il "moto perpetuo" del titolo sia da riferire alla vita on the road o piuttosto alla tradizione musicale cui Rüegg si accosta con grande intelligenza e spregiudicatezza. La domanda, vagamente retorica, è però molto precisa nel sottolineare la ricchezza del multi stilismo del compositore, capace di sintetizzare elementi ellingtoniani e sperimentazione.

Ne esce un affresco di grande complessità architettonica, che forse ascoltato a venticinque anni di distanza tradisce quella incontestata fiducia [figlia degli anni Settanta] nella elaborazione stratificata dei linguaggi, che poi il tempo ha sottoposto a qualche dubbio, ma che si fa apprezzare per la splendida qualità dell'interazione tra i solisti [tra i quali troviamo Herbert Joos e Wolfgang Puschnig, storico partner di Rüegg] e per la varietà di atmosfere.
