Bobby Avey: A New Face
A New Face, un nuovo volto nel mondo del piano trio e se a suggerirlo è uno come David Liebman, che presenta il disco e vi suona in quattro degli otto brani, vi è più di una buona ragione per crederci. Ma sgombriamo subito il campo da aspettative esagerate perché A New Face è un buon disco, a tratti ottimo, ma è esagerato definirlo un esordio clamoroso. Perché il ragazzo - Bobby Avey - ha talento e idee, i suoi compagni di viaggio lo assecondano adeguatamente, ma il trio si inserisce in quel filone che sembra ormai dominante per quanto riguarda la più classica formazione del jazz.

Ossia quello che mette in campo una certa sfrontatezza interpretativa, l'energia tipica del rock con la sensibilità jazzistica, una marcata propensione a miscelare i generi, l'immancabile inserimento nella tracking list di hits più o meno famose. Bobby Avey dribbla intelligentemente questa consuetudine componendo tutti e otto i brani presenti e dimostrando notevoli doti di scrittura. Che non è mai banale e alterna sapientemente momenti di grande dinamicità ad altri in cui i vuoti e le pause acquistano enorme valore semantico soprattutto nelle situazioni in cui la voce solista e quella prestigiosa di Dave Liebman.

A onor del vero, il trio svela appieno le proprie qualità nei quattro brani in cui il grande sassofonista depone i suoi sassofoni, presenza forse ancora troppo ingombrante per i giovani protagonisti. Si possono così apprezzare il pianismo dalle reminiscenze classiche del leader che non disdegna né sequenze minimaliste né lussureggianti quadri espressionisti ed il feroce interplay della sezione ritmica, energica ma anche capace di imprevedibili sottigliezze.

Da tenere d'occhio.
