Fred Anderson: 21st Century Chase
Si richiama idealmente - nel titolo - alla storica "sfida" tra Dexter Gordon e Wardell Gray del 1947, questo nuovo disco [disponibile anche in DVD] del patriarca del jazz di Chicago, il sassofonista Fred Anderson. L'occasione: nel marzo del 2009 il musicista ha festeggiato l'ottantesimo compleanno con un concerto nel suo club, il "Velvet Lounge," aggiungendo ai componenti del proprio quartetto, Jeff Parker alla chitarra, Harrison Bankhead al basso e Chad Taylor alla batteria, l'amico/rivale Kidd Jordan [solo di pochi anni più giovane] al tenore.

Il parallelo regge ovviamente solo come ideale "gioco" di riferimenti e la serata è stata costruita attorno a una lunga blowin' session in due parti, cui si aggiunge un bell'omaggio al batterista Alvin Fielder e [ma solo nel dvd] un altro brano con Henry Grimes ospite. Furiosa e densa, ma anche lirica e ispirata, così come ci si può attendere da artisti di questo livello, specialmente per quanto riguarda l'onestà espressiva con cui ogni volta affrontano la creazione istantanea, la musica del disco attraversa molte zone emotive e all'appassionato non mancheranno le occasioni per rin/tracciare linee di confronto tra i due vecchi leoni.

Chi preferisse il DVD, troverà, come ormai consueto nelle produzioni Delmark, un'attenta regia, pronta a cogliere, con immagini ben girate, le dinamiche della band. Certo, pur ricorrendo a qualche effetto e con azzeccati primi piani dei solisti, la visione di un concerto jazz in DVD è sempre vagamente artificiosa e non riesce - ovviamente - a ricreare l'energia dell'evento live. Gli extra aggiungono un commento del festeggiato e una sua discografia.
