might be nice to add sometime that tony scott was an energetic small group leader & was close to [& gave a major assist to] bill evans, when bill 1st came to n.y.c. -- more details on this can be found in the bill evans bio, HOW MY HEART SINGS -- & i, for one, fell for tony & the clarinet after hearing his wonderful work improvising with musicians from the far east -- the zen/koto group, in particular, would definitely be one of my desert island picks !!!

If there's an unheralded major jazz musician of yesteryear, it's certainly Tony Scott. His unique style and cerebral approach--while still swinging--put him in the forefront of New York's jazz world in the Fifties--sharing stages and studios with the biggest in the business. And his influence is heard in the work of today's two clarinet guys--you know who I mean. Yet today your chances of hearing Scott's records, even on KLON (L.A. Jazz) are nil. What a pity. As a former jazz DJ who spent a week at the musician's table with Scott back in 1957, in Bermuda, I can add that Scott was an intelligent and interesting man in many respects: curious and of eclectic interests. Late last year he apparently discovered something I wrote about him online and was kind enough to send me an email, in which he revealed he's writing a biography. Such a work has the potential to rank with the best of them, because Scott knew and played with all the greats. Those of us who know Scott's work can look forward to a good read.  I am trying to locate an address/email address of Tony Scott. I knew him during the 1970's in Rome when we both working there.I stayed in his apartment for the best part of 1979 and had great times! I have a tape of him playing the piano and singing, which would be a rarity I'm sure. He sings Lushlife and Sohisticated Lady, as well as playing his sketches of his Portrait Of Basie Opus that he said he was going to develop. I would love to make contact with him again and hopefully arrange for him to come out to Australia.

Tony Scott, stillliving and playing from his home in Rome, is one of the greatest living jazz musicians on the scene today. A great influence on me and my playing jazz reeds.
