Who is the greatest songwriter (or songwriting team) of the 20th century?

Date:  16-Nov-1999 07:42:14
From:  ChriS (cslawec9@idt.net)
Ellington. Basie. Monk. Horace Silver. Hoagy Carmichael. And in a lighter mood, I've got to include Lennon/McCartney, Jagger-Richards, and Fagen-Becker.

The songs/songbooks of George & Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern have been covered by jazzers since the '20s. Sammy Cahn penned quite a few tunes for Ol' Blue Eyes ("High Hopes" and "Call Me Irresponsible").

One of my personal faves is Antonio Carlos Jobim. "Desafinado", "One Note Samba", "Corcovado" and "The Girl From Ipanema" are just a few of his more popular tunes. He was (and I'm sure still is) Brazil's most distinguished songsmith.

 Greatest jazz songwriters?
Or all-time songwriters? For
my money I'll take George Gershwin
largely due to the exquisitely
perfect "Bess, You is My Women Now".
I'll also concur with P.Abella's Wayne Shorter
and up him with "Deelightful"
Lee Morgan.

George and Ira get my vote. By chance I happened to see a documentary on them (mostly George) a few yrs. ago on the Bravo channel and have been into their music ever since. They were geniuses.

I'd like to cast a vote for a couple of geniuses known to some as Dick Rogers & Larry Hart... (You know, Richard & Lorenz.) "My Romance" is a perfect song...

Everyone knows the songs of lennon/mcartney. sorry to rehash the old cliches...but they were, will, and always will be the greatest living songwriters in human history.it is unbridled what they did for every genre of music and i mean every genre.

If we think songwriting as put together some lyrics and some music, I think there´ s a lot of great songwriters, from jazz to folk and even "Brodway style". But if we think the song as a whole, there´ s no doubt about it: John Lennon and Paul McCartney. As a team, alone or just a name for a band: The Beatles. Under that name are the better music of this century.

If you use the term "greatest" I would have to say Lennon McCartney. They were (and there music still is) greater than any other singer/songwriters of the 20th century. I can't think of any others that did as much, musically, as they did. Do the comparisons and let me know if you come up with something different.

It is really interesting considering how many arguments people can have over all facets of music that greatest songwriter is so easily given to George Gershwin. His songs are simply perfect. What amazes me still is that he produced these heavenly gems out of the same bloody melodic patterns and even though i know them, every time i try to steal his style i sound like chaz and dave.

I also agree with DAN, that BESS YOU IS MY WOMEN NOW is the most sublime song ever written.

I am sick at the beatles, they were flat and simple. im sorry but the songs they produce were so dull and two dimensional. SGT pepper and abbey road are brilliant though, their lyrics are uninspireing and made to flow by using absaloute nonsence, and the music has no attempt at virtuosity or energy. The only way people ever liked them because, it is what they grew up with as standard pop music, like children today and the spice gils or other crap. and it provokes a subconcious reaction to feel enjoyment.

if you were ever to look at songwriting in a way where it actually has class then you have to look at Bob Dylan or Pete Townshend, im sorry but no one has ever come close to the standard of lyrical conntent that these two have. There will never be as good an album for songwriting after quadrophenia.

Im sixteen and i am looking back at my parents generation and seeing it from the outside, which is far clearer than anyone that lived through it.

Even though I was born in 1965 during the middle of their recording career,I have been a huge Beatles fan specifically a John and Paul fan since I was a child.Because John Lennon and Paul McCartney were both such brilliantly talented song writers, the best of the cntury!

The greatest songwriter of all team were two persons,John Winston Lennon and James Paul McCartney, because they were born to be that. Paul was sweet and lovely with an amazing imagination and John was ironic and clever with his own world. They needed each other like night and day, they sat in a room with a pair of guitars and made the greatest songs ever made. They didn´t know to write or read music, but they got their imagination to follow their dream. They wrote easily because all the songs were inside them, waiting to go out. They love their music very much... and in the end, the love you take it´s equal to the love you made.
