What kind of jazz do you play on romantic evenings?

KIND OF BLUE and Johnny Hartman/John Coltrane work for me--great mood setters.

32 Jazz and Concord are also rolling out some decent theme discs... jazz for a rainy day, jazz at nights end, jazz for when you feel hot & sexy, jazz for when you want to be naked...

That's easy: Kind of Blue. Remember Spike Lee's use of 'All Blues' in Mo' Better Blues? Exactly!

I like to play "Clifford Brown with Strings" or in the "Jazz 'Round Midnight" series, the Ballads.

Both are lovely.

Would you believe it, co-incidentally someone just sent me a copy of a jazz album entitled "Smoochin' - great jazz for a romantic evening" from Australia. A mix of fine artists such as Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Art Farmer, Kurt Elling, Blossom Dearie - also some really good Australians on there too - quite a surprise...light the candles, open the wine, this is the one for romance! Try finding it at www.sanity.com.au, an Australian CD site

All of the Johnny Hodges/Billy Strayhorn/Ellington ballads, like Passion Flower, Chelsea Bridge, Women really dig it too.

Thelonious Monk plays Ellington

The Genius of Coleman Hawkins (Verve) Perfect!

Ben Webster

P.S. can anyone tell me where great swing/jazz musicians hang out in Los Angeles? I'm dying out here. I'm talking about people who dig Vic Dickenson more than Watrous; Prez and Hawk more than Brecker and Trane (no offence intended to those styles).

Kind of Blue, or Quiet Nights.

I've got a nice Chet Baker/Stan Getz mix CD as well that is all nice slow balads in major keys.

If you want to have funky, kinky, animal sex, stick on Bitches Brew and go to 'Spanish key' :)

Try David Sanborn's "Pearls" CD and Kirk Whalum's "For You" CD. Also, for yall burners, when making a romantic CD you must include a cut titled "Lawns" by Carla Bley. A gentleman by the name of Larry Willis does a tender and soul touching piece on the piano.
God Bless!

Who in the world would want to play jazz-CDs on a romantic evening!? Isn't jazz meant to be LISTENED to? How can you concentrate on listening while you're trying to be romantic with someone? Or vice versa?

Date:  21-Aug-2000 21:33:05
From:  Simone
 Oh, Brogett, you're so-o-o romantic!

Date:  22-Aug-2000 18:31:24
From:  Broget Fettstoff
I am, Simone. I often have romantic dinners. And when I do, i don't simultaneously try to read a book, watch a movie, or marvel at a renaissance painting. Nor do I listen to jazz. As I tried to explain, I cannot understand how anyone could concentrate on being romantic while at the same time concentrating on e.g. 'Kind of Blue'. Who would put on 'Kind of Blue' and not listen to it with undivided attention? Who would let John Coltrane's complex solos interfere with their lovemaking?

Date:  23-Aug-2000 21:18:31
From:  Simone
Well, Broget, you've never ridden like a wild cowgirl with "So What" swirling in the air around you. There are different perspectives here. It is great music for many reasons, and in many ways.

The Hot Club of San Francisco - This group has mastered the gypsy-swing stylings of Django Reinhardt. Their music has a swingy, jazzy feel that can go from melancholy to flamboyant. It's danceable, romantic, sophisticated with a sentimental quality that's delicate, yet it has rhythms played at breakneck speed. Purchase CD at www.hcsf.com.

If you like it smooth and romantic, try Grant Green's "I Want To Hold Your Hand." When you want to really get down, make sure a hammond b-3 is in the mix in the Jimmy Smith/Jack McDuff/Groove Holmes/Don Patterson style. 1960s soul jazz before it got modernized.

Even the cocktail stuff like old Deodato and Walter Wanderley (pick through it carefully). Don't discount it on face value.
B-3/guitar/sax/drums RULES!

People Time / Stan Getz with Kenny Barron (“First Song” is the most beautiful jazz ballad!)

Although they've been mentioned earlier, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and Ballads by John Coltrane, are, I think, wonderful albums for romantic evenings.

Of course it depends on the mood -- wild passionate
jungle sex, playful kinkiness, melancholy lovemaking,
or just a nice mellow, romantic evening. Here's a list of
the ones from my collection that I've tried or think might
fit well:

Kind of Blue / Miles Davis
Sketches of Spain / Miles Davis
John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman
I Just Dropped By to Say Hello / Johnny Hartman
All For You / Diana Krall
My Funny Valentine / Chet Baker
Chet Baker Sings
Jazz Masters 58: Nina Simone Sings Nina
Pure Ella / Ella Fitzgerald
Getz/Gilberto / Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto

...or, if you're just in the mood to *hear* about kinky
lovemaking:

Fine and Mellow: Live at the Birdland West / Carmen
McRae -- track 8, "My Handy Man Ain't Handy No More."

I agree with Kinda Blue, but Clarence Clemmons, Peacemaker is good for the really wild stuff, and you can never go wrong with any recording of Joao Gilberto, Luiz Bonfa. The Jazz 'Round Midnight series can get old pretty fast though. I don't know, As long as it has a beat, right?

Kurt Elling- This Time It's Love/Flirting With Twilight - Oooooo Mama !!
Or if you're more into classics then John Coltrane - Ballads........or Coltrane/Hartman duet (also great for the shower). Another wonderful Cd is Pat Metheny & Charlie Haden - Beyond The Missouri Sky- obscure, all magic, defenitely a favorite.
