He was an absolute genius who was dismiss, or not taken as seriously, because of his purported buffonery--playing mutiple instruments at one time or playing simultaneously two different songs-- while performing and his racial rantings, which in my opinion, was more insightful than one would expect. Admittedly, he made some weak recordings tryilng to incorporate popl music into his repetoire. But if you want to hear true brillance, listen to Kirk's solo on Perdido on Charles Mingus Live at Carnegnie Hall 1974. To get the broad and correct perspective on Rhassan please listen to the 4 CD package call the 4 Aces. Kirk deserves to mention in the same refrain with Parker, Coltrane, Rollins, Miles and Mingus. His experimentation with sound, harmonies, classical juxtapositions, and whatever I know so little about, are boundless, timeless, and rapturous. Jazz historian need to re-evaluate his place in music and move his stature up a notch or two. |

| | Ya know, I've never heard anything like him. When I first heard him wailing on his flute, grunting, humming and doing what Rahsaan does best, all I could do was smile the biggest smile on my face. I knew that this man had to be a genius. I never thought that grunting could be considered jazz, but the way Rahsaan did it was innovative and crazy. He stands out like silver dime among pennies. SHINE BABY SHINE. Rest in peace old buddy. | | In the mid-eighties I lost some 500 some blues and jazz albums. Of all those albums one stands in my mind as the one I didn't hear enough of. The album was Rip, Rig and Panic. Something about it... |
