Now that they've recorded with John Scofield on "A Go Go," who if anyone would you like to hear them record with next? (My answer -- Pat Martino).

Hmm... How about Pat Boone or Florence Henderson? Maceo Parker comes to mind, too.

MMW would sound great with anybody. My vote? MMW with PAT MARTINO sounds like a natural fit. But just imagine MMW with DAVE PIKE or ARTHUR BLYTHE or JAMES CARTER or CHARLIE HUNTER. BILL FRISELL seems like another obvious pairing. And the idea of MMW with MACEO PARKER rocks too.

 How about Mike Stern.

who cares? mmw are ACTUAL jazz innovators in this age of jazz nothing, easy listening, and jazz nazis. w marsalis, etc. ( and of course this swing thing whatever that is) So, I wish people would calm down and listen, and add these discs to their library, because they are impotant, all phish associations aside.

I reckon that these great musicians would be great to do an album with Steve Turre.-it would be an unusual, YET provocative idea.

PUH-LEEZE!!! Don't put Maceo in the same sentence or the same breath w/ Pat Boone & Florence Henderson!!!

Having survived MMW in concert in Chicago a few weeks back, I think I need to say that before MMW records any more records with anyone else, they need to get their own act together again first. This was the 4th time I had seen them, and they always get at least a little out there, but what supposedly sets MMW apart from the rest of the pack is their ability to groove. That ability was NOWHERE in site. They tried to prove just how avant garde they are, and I'm sorry, after seeing the real pioneers of the avant garde, in the city that has the deepest roots of avant garde, Medeski Martin and Wood were a pale comparison. They played a lot of notes but didn't say a damn thing. Cecil Taylor and Albert Ayler may beat the bejeezus out of their respective instruments, but that has a point. MMW had no point. If they are going to be a jazz band, they need to realize what all jazz comes down to: GROOVE. whether that groove swings (Benny Goodman, Woody Herman) bops (Charlie Parker, Dizzy, Thelonious) hard bops (??) (Miles, Hank Mobley) boogaloos (Lou Donaldson, Grant Green) or funks (Charlie Hunter, MMW on a good day) that GROOVE must be there.
Now that I've gotten off of my soapbox, I think an organ based quintet of Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove and MMW would be the youngest hippest and hardest grooving band of the millenium. (and for those of you who must have your jazz in a wheelchair because Hargrove and Redman inexplicably don't do it for you, replace the pups with Nat Adderley and Lou Donaldson.)

Keep Your Ears Open,
Paul

I find it comical when people pine on what frontman MMW should aquire to make them a better ensemble - ignorance to the fact that MMW is a band that performs "live" as a mainstay (not just to promote an album - ie $$$) and the extended solos by each member of the band outshines the greatest jazz performers out there, dead or alive. And I find it hysterical when they bring up John Scofield, one of the most uninteresting guitarists in the genre, to fill that spot.

I think it's to early to start hailin MMW as jazz geniuses. I think we should wait and see how their music evolves over the next few years.

I think that Martin, Medeski, and Wood, should do another album on their own. Musical feats that they accomplished on the album It's a Jungle in Here, are just incredible. They simply don't need anyone else to play with.
Also, I saw John Scofield here in Des Moines Iowa, sometime in July of 98. Scofield brought Bill Stewart (incredible drummer from Des Moines, my home town, who now plays in New York) Larry Sterns (or something) on B3, and some funky ass bass player. My point is that all thought the band sounded great it just wasn't M M W, who plays on A Go-Go. Anyway, it's a sweet Cd that all should own.

As far as the guy who said MMW needs to find their own GROOVE, I totally disagree. I think MMW has something most musicians don't have today, GROOVE! They are some of the funkiest players around, no doubt. Now, I do admit they get their groove off much more with Scofield, but these guys have what it takes to be a funk trio. Personally, I was quite impressed listening to them play with Charlie Hunter live. I think there is a possible album there. We'll see...

M.M&W are good but the real " groove " is yet to be discovered by these 3 young cats. Sound like they are still toying with their instruments and traps. They might be hired by Charles Aznavour for his next gig at the Casino di Montecarlo or by Tom Jones for his next season @ Las Vegas. The Scofield " move " was a smart one on The Verve side - Scofield never sounded so funky since he bought an electri gitar - i hope they made a lot of money! but if their management is looking for the right strategy they'd better move on the pop field. And leave space to some real young unsung jazz genius... if any

I'd like to hear them record with Charlie Hunter too.

For the person commenting on the Hammond player with Scofield the name is Larry Goldings - and check him out he is one of the groovemasters of the Hammond B3 not only does he play on and off with Scofield but has played and recorded with Maceo Parker (Mo' Roots., Life on Planet Groove)

I had the chance to catch MMW with Scofield... I was not impressed. It seemed that Billy Martin and Chris Wood were having a hard time keeping up with the Rhythmic Displacement of a full force John Scofield solo. However on the bright note .. John Medeski proved to be the perfect partner for Scofield, after all Medeski has been involved with the New York City jazz scene for quite a while.
As for Medeski's next sparring partner he should get
-John McGlaughlin.

 MMW move some serious air!
I did like them with Scofield (he never sounded better)... Frisell would be a good choice for another set.. An odder choice, (that i'm sure will draw some critques)would be Metheny... He has been playing with all types of characters of late and could be a good foil for MMW...
Another couple of choices:
Bela Fleck...
Adrian Belew...

I agree with everyone who voted for Frisell and Charlie Hunter. I'll add a few: John Zorn, David Murray and (oh, I can only dream) James Blood Ulmer.
P.S. Since Elvis doesn't want to tour with the Attractions anymore can I recommend he team up with MMW?

Listen to the real champions of the avant garde and you'll toss that MMW tape out the window. Better groove exists and better avant garde exists. But wait, they didn't play with Phish. Nevermind.

Bela Fleck and at least one of the Wootens
Or how about Bobby McFerrin?

Recently saw a mmw show at va tech in blacksburg, and they were not smoking at all. Seems like a lot of their shows start off with the first set crappy jazz but the second set ends up jamming. Unfortunately, the show i saw featured two sets of crappy jazz. Martin and wood never got going together and they are what makes the band funky.

I am really tired of the so called "jazz" jam band. These
guys don't play jazz if you ask me and any record that an
artist like Scofield would play with these guys on I
would consider a "NOVELTY" release. These dudes
are not breaking any ground and the only thing that
saved that Scofield record from boring monotony is
Scofield's compositional ability. These guys DO need a
singer out front and his name is JAMES BROWN. To
me these guys are stuck in a James Brown loop.
Just Calling it as I see it...James

I saw MMW up in Pittsburgh this last summer and I thought they were pretty good. I don't have much experience with avante garde so I wouldn't know how to judge them according to that, but there integration of Jazz and modern Pop I think is genius. Despite what labels they are going to be tagged with I think there opening up the ears of a genration that may have otherwise been blind to the art of Jazz.

How about Larry Carlton? Derek Trucks (quite likely if you consider the similarities between Medeski and Kofi Burbridge)? And by God, I miss Danny Gatton for discussions like this. He could teach MMW so much. Hell, he could teach anybody.

MMW are not the only innovators in Jazz, but they are sure at the top of the list. All of you clowns who say that they don’t groove ( specially the idiot who said that they don’t play Jazz at all ) need a hearing aid because you are freaking DEAF. There are two types of Jazz listeners that post on this site…the old, decrepit senior citizens and the younger hipper crowd who are open to new ideas. Most of the time the elderly folk, which I will call the Jurassics because they love Jurassic Jazz, seem to have an affinity to attack anything that they do not understand. Kind of reminds me of the reaction of the Jazz word in the 1960s to Miles Davis. All I have to say to the Jurassics is…go buy some new batteries for your hearing aids, put aside that old phonograph and purchase a CD player, and buy this new recording medium called a Compact Disc…If you don’t you will miss out on a mountain of great music that has come out since your last record purchase (probably somewhere around 1959 or so). But I guess music is not the point, the real reason behind the Jurassics’ behavior is the simple fact that they like to scold younger people. You know…grumpy old men behavior…

P.S. If you posted a negative message and you are not older than 60, then you are probably just simple minded. Give country music a chance…I’ve heard that it is pretty good…and there a tons of Country music sites where you can post your intelligent musical comments. We will see you back here when you mature a little…maybe.
