| | Dear Mr. Mathieson, I have for a long time being one of the better informed broadcasters in this island of Sri Lanka by virtue of my regular reference of your submissions on the JJA Website! I am a Jazz Host on Radio, and have my own hour per week. It was only after your little 'bio' in the AAJ Website that I realized that there is much that you hold in common with me, and my own interests and pursuits. Nice to know there are others who 'mix things' in a similar way. You may want to ask another Scotsman about me; he knows me well from trips for concerts in Sri Lanka- his name, Martin Taylor. Ah!! Of course you'd know him!!!! I had asked Leslie Gourse this same question, but, I am not sure she saw it to reply; I have heard it said that Monk helped in some way ( a limited way that he could, considering his own predicament) with the careers of Herbie Nichols and Elmo Hope. I'd love to know how true that is. Ms. Gourse's own wonderful book on Monk did not address that point. It would help to appreciate that time in the development of modern improvised music, if that question could be answered. Thanks. Thanks also for r |
