 Howard:

I really appreciate what you do to legitimize the avant-garde in Future Jazz.

Since you both write about jazz and write fiction, I'd be interested to know your thoughts on "jazz-like" fiction. Who's captured the essence of jazz through literature?

Thought you might like to see the next generation of the Sims family,( Zoot, Ray Gene, Bobby ) in action.
Go to www.mp3.com/groovediggers and see Zoot's nephew's website.

Just to answer Alice, above, who didn't leave an e-mail address--I love the jazz-related fiction of Donald Newlove in the out-of-print Sweet Adversity (see an excerpt at the Jazz Journalists Assoc. website www.jazzhouse.org, under "Evidence" in the online forum Re: Jazz & Fiction), also the jazz-imbued noirs of Chester Himes, Rafi Zabor's The Bear Comes Home, and Ishmael Reed's The Freelance Pall-Bearers and Mumbo Jumbo (especially, of all his works). That's just scratching the surface, but delivers some great writing that has jazz somehow in it.

Rose, all of my reviews are NOT in Future Jazz -- I haven't collected them, and don't intend to until I'm clipping coupons in old age! Although I've written a lot of record reviews, I'd rather give readers a book that is more read-through than spot-at-a-time. Maybe someone else will collect all those reviews (starting in Down Beat in '75, but also spread across the Chicago Daily News, Chicago Magazine, Jazziz, the Village Voice, etc etc)

As far as schools for jazz studies in California, I'm hardly an expect -- the only ones I know about are Cal Arts, which has always seemed to be an interested program, and UC Santa Barbara (or is it UCSan Diego?) where Anthony Davis and George Lewis teach. I suggest asking Ted Gioia, Jazz Journalist of another month, who teaches at Stanford. Or: study something else at college level, and get that jazz education by playing with the best people you can find who'll let you hang with them.

Good luck!

 Howard,
i've looked on jazz as one of, if the not, the greatest forms of music. I am currently working on a report for school about "Trends of the 20th Century" (i chose jazz music). I was wondering if you could tell me what you think the impact of jazz is on today's society and music? and, what does the future hold for Jazz music? If you oculd get around to answering these questions i'd greatly appreciate it.

-Rob

Mr. Mandel: I have just finished an 18 month stint writing for Hot House Magazine. It was my first experience writing about jazz and I found that I really enjoyed the work. Do you have any advise as to how and where I can go about looking for free lance work? Best, David Orthmann

 Hi Howard...

I'm musician but not professionnal and above all a music and jazz fan...
Very recently I was visiting friends in Lausanne,Switzerland..
and fortunately I had the chance to watch perform...
an extra-odinary electric contemporary jazz quartet...
named Platine Heidelberg ( drums, bass, sax and guit )

after the show I had a nice talk with the leader-composer, Michel Gaillard.
this guy plays and compose since about 25 years and did spend a few years in the States in the early eighties.. ( he is an old friend of Dave Douglas, knows Bill Frisell, etc... )

I have the connection with him and wanted to know if something can be
done to bring his stuff under better exposure.. ( some notice in your paper,
gigs connections, agent ?... whatsoever.. )

hope u'll give me some feedback

with all my best regards

Pierre Girard

Howard, I have set up an interview with the legendary saxaphonist. The problen I am having,is not knowing what questions to ask. He made it clear , he does not want to talk about the past. Which was not the direction I wanted to go. I have the a working title "Masters Never Stop Learning" since he is currently enrolled in advanced music classes at my school.
Can, you please give me some ideas?

I am doing research on early blues women songwriters. Do you have a reference for a good bio /discography/songlist of Estella Yancey? What references are most useful in researching the early blues women's songs and lives?
Many thanks.

 Dear Howard,
What do you think about a quote from Derek Baileys book - Improvisation: its nature and Practise in which he says about Jazz; "A music once described as 'the sound of surprise' is now chiefly enjoyed as a reminder of yesteryear".

Do you think this assesment is fair?

Much obliged,

Jules Buckley (London)

 Hello Howard

How do you think the recording industry and commercial forces have affected the development of Jazz.Has it compromised the aspects of Jazz that really give the genre of music character.
