What is it that you like most about jazz?

From:  Chris Genzel (stamil@t-online.de)
The ability to surprise, the improvisation which makes each rendition of a piece different - these principles can be found everywhere.

I like Jazz for listening to when I need to relax. It also makes for quite a refreshing change from the garbage that now passes for pop music.

To me GETZ/GILBERTO is so beautiful it's almost unreal.

I love jazz for the same reasons I love one on one conversations. Jazz is personal, it says something, it tells a story, it expresses emotions, both happy and sad, it can make you listen OR dance. What else could do that?

Jazz is the sound of people listening to each other. While many enthusiasts point to individual improvisation as the heart of the music -- and it is certainly important -- the magic of interdependent, mutually engaged give-and-take is every bit as satisfying and special. Listen, for instance, to the MJQ on "The Last Concert": the way those four men drive each other -- and pick up on each other's cues for inspiration -- well, it just gives me hope for a better world.

I recall the title of a book that perhaps states it simply " THE SOUND OF SURPRISE ".Have you sat and listened to an old favorite recording and there suddenly theres a section that was'nt there before.Ain't Jazz grand.

The excitement, the sense of discovery, the communication between humans, the way it can touch you personally, the pure expression, the revealing of the soul, the passion, the gentleness, the fury, the newness, the old and the new, the richness, the boldness, the vulnerability, the humor, the evolution, the diversity, the sorrow, the happiness, the reality and the fantasy.......

I like that Jazz is multi-directional communication. The composer, the arranger, the performers, the audience all participate in something that couldn't exist without them. I love the constant communication between performers when Jazz is performed live, and our communication with the audience. I love the music, it's stability, mutability and permeability in the same package. And I love the spontaneous variety of voices possible in any Jazz ensemble that hasn't been heard in live music since the days of Gabrieli and Bach. I consider Jazz to be the only true American musical form and chamber music every bit as glorious as the European variety from Mozart or Bartok.

It's funky, it's free, it's deep. From Coltrane "the preacher" to Miles "the muted meloncholy" to Bill Evans "Dr. Talk to myself"....all in all, jazz is just great. It got even better when I realized that a pattern is in 90% of all jazz........it makes you wonder. It also helps me think....listening to Coltrane preach helps me decide things, while also he's great to listen to when reading "the Good Book".... :-)

So what is it i like about jazz..???

Its alive.....and for the most part; it is
not false and contrived.

It speaks to me and has for many many years.

the only exceptions would be the angry jazz of the
mid-sixties.....the honks,squeals, and gutteral runs
on brass and woodwind instruments....i did have a hard
time with that.....even today....1999...there just does
not seem to be a place for me and angry jazz....

but give me any teddy wilson, billie holiday,,,,duke
ellington,,,,theolonius monk,,,,and 100's more and
i like it.......far more than i can describe..

I like the head, heart, and body combo - great jazz has it all. It has a funky side and a spiritual side - roots and wings - the whole keyboard.

what i like most about jazz...

Flowing free,
Sudden stops,
Bebop here,
A little Hop,
A gentleness that soothes the soul
Abrasiveness that's loud and bold.
It can be boring but should not be
as long as one uses creativity.

The spontaneous conversations from one musician
to another that's shared with the listener are like life.
When you look a little closer at each phrase, chord,
or note, you hear something new and different.

jazz mirrors life!

Jazz is... something that forces you to feel the performer's emotions, his happiness, his sadness, and even sometimes his anger. Jazz is so much, but that's pretty much how I can sum it up in less than a page.

OH, silver tree!
Oh, shining rivers of the soul!

In a Harlem cabaret
Six long-headed jazzers play.
A dancing girl whose eyes are bold
Lifts high a dress of silken gold.

Oh, singing tree!
Oh, shining rivers of the soul!

Were Eve's eyes
In the first garden
Just a bit too bold?
Was Cleopatra gorgeous
In a gown of gold?

Oh, shining tree!
Oh, silver rivers of the soul!

In a whirling cabaret
Six long-headed jazzers play.

I like Jazz for the simple reason that when you approach it you dont know what youre going to get out of it. Good jazz can never be predicted. In this way it really can be likened to classical forms of music which is the only greater form of expression.

I also like Jazz because when i dance i look like a monkey and when peterson swings my lack of cordination seems to do him justice.

I hate pop music.

I'm fond of the good music and the jazz is a good music for me when I'm tired. But I prefer to be listening and watch too, because when I watch life misic event the jazz, I can enjoy the all the magic of this music.

The people have to feel the music to enjoy it. This is my personal opinion about the music. I like the music specialy
the jazz. The New Orleans jazz this the better.
