| If someone were to visit your hometown, which local players would you suggest they make a point of seeing?

| | In Philly, be sure to check out guitar whiz Jimmy Bruno at Chris' Jazz Cafe (1421 Sansom St.). I'd also make a point of seeing John Swana (trumpet) and the venerable Larry McKenna & Bootsie Barnes at Ortlieb's Jazz Haus (847 N. 3rd St.). |

| | In Chicago, there are far too many truly stellar talents to list than space allows, but here's the cream of the crop: Johnny Frigo -- Johnny is well, well, indescribable (sp?). He is beyond all else, one of THE jazz greats, and although many haven't had the chance to check him out, everybody should. Von Freeman -- Tuesdays at New Apartment. His group is simply amazing, and my fellow drummers need to get there just to check out Michael Raynor. Von is truly phenomenal, and legend has it that Von was actually Miles' first choice for the 50's quintet. Jodie Christian -- Jodie is another monster, and we here in Chicago have the opportunity to see him practically every day of the week. (for those of you outside of Chicago who may want to check him out, he's all over Eddie Harris' Listen Here) Finally, Kurt Elling, Fareed Haque and Patricia Barber are all at the Green Mill (outside of the Jazz Showcase, the Mill is the mother of Chicago jazz clubs)on a weekly basis, and they're all great. Keep Your Ears Open, Paul |

| | We used to have jazz players, and very good ones, in Guadalajara, but as you can imagine, there is no jazz on the radio and even the University radio plays rock of very bad taste, most sung in English with very foul words which almost nobody understands anyway. Now, there is really only one person. Maestro Carlos DeLaTorre who plays piano at the Coppenhagen at Parque Revolucion near centro de la ciudad. His piano voicings on the standard type tunes he plays are truely original since, by no choice of his own, he learned evrything with only his ears. They hear a lot. And please, try to find music by a very incredible singing artist, Eugenia Leon who is as fine as anyone ever recorded.(www.eugenia.com.mx) |

| | San Diego, CA has no finer musician than saxophonist Gary Lefevre. He is a formally trained musician with his roots in beebop. Having mixed it up with performers ranging from Chet Baker to Zoot Sims, Gary Lefevre is up there with the best of them. |

| | I no longer live in Philly, having resided in LA since '76. But I know of some really great plyers still living there. The wonderfully swingin' pianist Eddie Green. The always working bassists Tyrone Brown. And a bad-ass drummer Greg McGiver. And of course Odean Pope, saxophonist with Max Roach for many years, along with the aforementioned Tyrone Brown. I am very proud to be a jazz musician from Philadelphia!! Oh man...I couldn't not mention one of my major influences still swingin'in Philly...MICKEY ROKER !!! | | In Seattle we have a ton of great jazz musicians, many of whom have regular gigs. Floyd Standifer tops the list. You can hear his quartet every Wed. night at The New Orleans restaurant in Pioneer Square. Floyd's bass player, Phil Sparks, plays a duo gig with a different special guest every Thursday night at Mona's. On Tuesdays I highly recommend visiting the Old Town Ale House where you'll catch drummer John Bishop. He's always got top notch musicians with him, including Hans Tueber, Jeff Johnson, Dave Peterson, Rick Mandyck, Chuck Deardorf, Doug Miller and Marc Seales. On Fridays and Saturdays, Tula's is the place to go. Give them a call and ask who is playing. On any given night there's great jazz from the likes of Don Lanphere and New Stories; Jay Thomas and his quartet; and vocalists Jay Clayton and Greta Matassa. Check it out! |

| | More good Chicago stuff -- Fred Anderson, one of the founding fathers of the AACM, & his longtime partner Billy Brimfield, continue to host the Sunday evening session at the Velvet Lounge at 22nd & Indiana Ave. -- strong young players, anonymous & talented locals, & the occasional eccentric visionary all make this one of the most enjoyable, unpretentious, & musically satisfying events in town. If you're thirsty & don't feel like drinking alcohol, ask the bartender for a "mix" -- it's a home-made fruit concoction, as bracing as any I've ever tasted -- Also -- look in the papers for Ernest Dawkins, & go anywhere he's playing!!! Can't be beat -- |

If you want to hear a great trio go to the Sheraton Grand on Harbor Island. Mike Wofford piano, Bob Magnusson bass, Jim Plank drums, and featuring Holly Hofmann on flute. And don't forget Charles McPhearson. The list goes on and on and on.Come to San Diego and enjoy |

| | We've got one of the best here in Oklahoma City, guitarist Benny Garcia has played/recorded with 'em all. Benny Goodman/Peggy Lee/Zoot /Patsy Cline/was and still is on the bus with The Texas Playboys, toured with Bob Wills and the boys...(and many more I can't get him to mention)...a true master. He never plays the same thing twice. His compadre, drummer Tommy Perkins is of the same school as Benny, another true master. Benny/Tommy and their band "Talk of the Town" (vocalist and bassiest..me) play every Wed. and Sat. night at a club in Oklahoma City called Dooley's Tower Club. The vocalist and myself are "newbies" compared with these guys and their cronies that come out and sit in with us. What an education!!! Jeff If ever out here in the hinterlands, stop by. Jeff |

| | Without question, in Atlanta, you've gotta see and hear TSA! These cats are ferocious! The piano player (Motley?) is a dynamo! Jacque LAsure on guitar, is from outerspace - how can anyone be that good? The bass player (I can't remember his name) is a technician! On drums, they've got a cat named Bernard (who I swear I've seen with Freddy Cole, Abby Lincoln and a couple of others),By far, the best night of Jazz I've seen in years! |

| | Here in Perth, Western Australia, we have a very lively Jazz scene, although gigs come and go. The people to look out for - the Michael Pigneguy Sextet (hard bop in the Shorter/Blakey Jazz Messengers style, but mostly original stuff); Jamie Oehlers Quintet (ditto, but harder - jamie is one hell of a tenorman), Libby Hammer and Hip-Mo'-Toast - she swings and bops and ENTERTAINS, whether it is lounge music with a firm tongue in the cheek or straight ahead standards; Matthew Jodrell - note that name, he is the hottest young trumpeter I've ever heard and ranges from Armstrong through Hubbard and Morgan to today, with his own sound. If he ever goes to NY he will make it; James Sandon, a big man with an amazingly subtle sound on tenor and alto; Graham Wood, an absolutely brilliant keyboard player; Carl Mackey - a tenorman in the Hank Mobely style, beautiful middle weight sound... and the list goes on. Check out the gig guide at http:\\www.jazzline.net.au\~kenyon\jazz,html |

| | In the Monterey, CA area, I'd recommend some expatriate Brasilians. Helcio Milito and Weber Iago (aka Drummond) on percussion and piano work frequently as duo. Helcio had a disc called KILOMBO (Antilles) years ago, appeared on Getz' box set GIRL FROM IPANEMA (in sixties), founded Tamba Trio, one of first bossa nova groups. Weber is a composer and has appeared on discs by Ali Ryerson, Claudia Villela, Romero Lubambo, Kenny Stahl, Jeff Linsky. In addition, Ms. Villela, who lives 45 miles from here, is a remarkable singer. Her album, SUPERNOVA, with Toninho Horta and Michael Brecker among others, is excellent. |

Others to look for: Paul Bollenback (guitar), Ronnie Wells (vocals), Jerry Gordon (guitar), David Kane (piano). I wish I could tell people to seek out Eva Cassidy, but lamentably, she is no longer with us. |

| | Harold Land is a great tenor sax player who's been around for ages. He's recorded several albums that are top notch, and has played as a sideman for countless top-name artists. The fact that he resides in So. California means that he's frequently overlooked by the jazz media with an East Coast bias, but he is certainly among the best players around. |
