Who do you feel is lending a fresh new voice to jazz?

Date:  14-Dec-1998 18:18:12
From:  Chris Genzel (stamil@t-online.de)
Nils Petter Molvaer. Even if some people say that Khmer sounds like a poor man's Grassy Knoll, I think it is a very remarkable recording - and Molvaer's playing is full of emotion.

To refreshing voices to me are singer/pianist Patricia Barber and pianist Marc Cary. Barber's "Modern Cool" and Cary's "The Antidote" are both very different than anything I've heard in a while (yet accessible), and easily make my best of '98 list.

Whether it's scat, vocalese (an under-appreciated art) or straight-ahead Jazz vocals, the new cat on the scene is Giacomo (say "Jock-a-Mo") Gates. Check out his new CD "Fly Rite" (on Sharp Nine) for his lyrics to Lee Morgan's "Speedball" and "Epistrophy" (which has the blessing of T.S. Monk himself). His debut CD--also great--was "Blue Skies" on the DMP label.

Threeedom! ........ This group offers a fresh, dynamic approach to the acoustic jazz trio.

Members of Threeedom! have performed with:

Don Cherry, Sir Roland Hanna, Jimmy Heath, Eddie Gomez, Lionel Hampton, Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Sal Mosca, Valery Panomarev, as well as many other great jazz artists well known and underknown.
____________________________________________________________

"Threeedom! is a treat - a deft trio led by strikingly cool vibist Mark Josefsberg, with bassist Fred Berman adding a subtle, solid touch and drummer Skip Scott lightly whisking things right along.
These three jazz pros improvise so merrily together that "play" is a better-than-usual word for what's going on, and the music seems to come from a single mind... Threeedom!'s sound is on the surface gentle, stirring like a breeze, and yet rewards closer listening because there really is something substantial, free and enchanting going on."

Oh and this might outrage some of you, but I'm completely serious: Pat Metheny. IMAGINARY DAY is one of the freshest jazz sounds I can remember hearing, and it doesn't harken back to any of Pat's earlier stuff (except maybe the preceding QUARTET album, a bit). Pat continues to re-invent himself as "a fresh new voice" every few years, much as Miles did.

If you would like to hear a fresh new voice, then kindly observe an unheralded talent quietly rising from within the international jazz community. Her name is Gerri Morrison and believe me when I say, this elegant lady is a musical treasure. I happened upon a performance while visiting Hawaii last November. I then heard a bit more about her at the recent JazzTimes Convention in NYC. Last month I saw her perfoming on BET on Jazz "Jazz Discovery" where she received a winning score from their judges and is now advancing through that showcase. This vocalist has class, style and talent. Anyone concerned about or interested in the future of jazz vocals or in enjoying an elegant ambassador of the genre should take note. I found more about her at www.gnote.com. Take a look, spread the word, thank me later.

Keep listenin'

Patricia Barber: although not new if you've ever been hip to the Chicago jazz scene, she is trying to turn jazz on its ear without resorting to wailing pyrotechnics or free playing. That is truly fresh if you ask me.

Check out Michael Ray and The Cosmic Krewe's new disc on Monkey Hill, "Funk If I Know" for a fresh slant on that Sun Ra meets George Clinton thang.

Nils Petter Molvauer's Khmer is indeed an interesting group. Ditto that message! They were superb at this year's Montreal Festival.

And don't forget Kurt Elling when it comes to jazz vocals, although I much prefer "The Messenger" to his most recent disc.

Nils Petter Molvaer is a real good new voice on the jazz stage. Another, not that new, but often forgotten is Courtney Pine. We had him at the International Jazz Festival in Kristianstad, Sweden, last summer and it was great.
However. Take care.

My vote for FRESH in the jazz vocal department goes unambiguously to Kitty Margolis-especially her "Straight Up With a Twist" CD. It even looks fresh. Kitty's sound is largely underivative. She has hip scat and ballad chops but the thing that makes her so different is her use of grooves and the way she re-invents songs from the inside out. This is one that Gen X will dig, and so will their parents if they are hip enough.

Percussionist Leon Parker makes a lot of enjoyable, artistic music. He uses distinctive percussion combined with other instruments (like steel pan and vocals on "Belief") to create music that is accessible without being shallow. Check him out!

Hi! I'm from Buenos Aires and I play a radio program since 1986 that is called "El Intruso".
You can visit my site at http://members.tripod.com/elintruso
And here is what I wanna say. I think that the "thing" is in the Downtown. Those guys like Zorn, Frisell, Baron, Fiuczinsky. Also Bobby Previte, Horvitz, and others.
Another musicians I like: Patricia Barber, John Lurie, Misha Mengelberg.
But Ihave to say that here, in Argentina, we have one guy that is extraordinary. His name is Adrian Iaies and his last record, "Nostalgias y otros vicios" is a beauty.
In that album he plays "tangos" but in a jazz standard way. It's incredible. Believe me!
And if you want to here something, you'll find a link in my web site to his.
Thanks for all and GOOD LUCK!!!

Tom Butts who is a tenor saxophone player who recorded on Chuck Wayne's last album "Alberta Clipper." It was recorded in a small studio, Ruby Slippers Studio, but there's no address(New Jersey, in the NYC area?). I gather it was a Tom Butts production. Although he has a lot to learn about CD packaging, the music is great. Tom Butts is a tremendous sax player. Wayne is his usual top quality self with four of his compositions on the disc. Wayne's always been a marvelous accompanist and the double voicing of Butts and Wayne is reminiscent of some of the Wayne/Sims work. The music shifts from ballads to incredible be-bop (Wayne solo on his tune "Butterfingers" is frightening). The bass player Gary Mazzaroppi is on two cuts. Anyway, a small label(or a big one) would do well to track down Butts, and issue this CD properly. WKCR in New Jersey has played some of the cuts - might be a good place to start a search. Tom Butts is fantastic.

Can I blow my own horn? I don't know how fresh my vocal is
but I did quit smoking a few years ago so my breath is ok. I
am a relatively new artist currently gigging in Seattle.
I've just released my new 1999 (3rd) CD and would love some
feedback. You can download some of the songs for free
including "My mind can't keep its hands off you" (#1 on
mp3.com's Jazz Vocal charts) and "Dig that crazy sound" (#1
on mp3.com's Swing charts). The full CD is also available at
my web site for purchase.
The site: http://www.mp3.com/deank/

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Has anyone out there in the Chicago area come across a singer name MARIE ALEXANDRE. She makes rare club appearances, seems she does that wedding reception and private party circuit more. This lady has a great reputation among jazz musicians and club owners in this area. She did the "Gershwin" tribute alonside Spider Saloff, where she sang most of the songs from Porgy and Bess. Her rendition of "I Loves You Porgy" had people in the audience in tears!

Muhal Richard Abrams is often written off as one of those way out avante garde types who are too painful to listen to. Nothing could be further from the truth! His big band albums are exciting, great jazz - I think he's one of the great late 20th century band leaders. My two favorites are "Blu Blu Blu" and "Blues Forever." The cast of players is very impressive with Baikida Carrol, Craig Harris, Eugene Gee, Howard Johnson, Jean-Paul Bourelly, Andrew Cyrille etc. etc. I don't really like "Free Jazz" but these recordings are more in the line of Mingus big band work with that kind of energy and fantastic solos.
