What do you look for in a music retailer? Where are the best places to purchase Jazz music?

| | 1. Good selection. 2. Knowledgable staff. Locally owned stores are more likely to be staffed by music(jazz) lovers than the chains. A good staff can steer you in the right direction. 3. Reasonable prices.I don't like mail order or cd clubs. The money you save in sales tax and lower prices is eaten up by shipping costs and you miss out on the whole record buying experience. |

| | Staying with a "Mom & Pop" store is generally your best bet to find what you are looking for in jazz. The only on-line solution I have found is the www.bopshop.com. What they lack in cds makes up in vinyl. They buy and sell new and used vinyl and Know Jazz. Branford Marsalis orders from them for good reason. Their web site details it. |

| | Cadence has an excellent selection, including a lot of imports. Also they have a clearance page and used/cut-out section worth exploring. They are reasonably priced, too.Allegro Corporation's site has imports and a clearance page called cybermusic sales. I don't have either address in front of me, but drop me a line if you can't find it. |

| | I live in Indianapolis, IN, where the Best Buys chain has pretty much driven out most of the independent-owned music stores. And - surprise - once Best Buys achieved this virtual monopoly, the chain removed much of its selection of non-rock / non-pop music (including jazz and reggae) and raised prices by a couple of bucks. So I'm in what I hope is a unique situation: to shop at "the monolith" seems a little bit unethical, but where else is there to shop? So, I try to visit Bloomington, IN (a college town that has a couple of good small music stores that sell indies); and I sometimes shop on the Web. I agree that Web shopping does not really save money, but even a business like Amazon.com is superior to what I find here due to its fair prices and broad selection. At this point of our economy, I think sometimes you have to ignore the size of the company and try to focus on what it offers - if it offers independent releases, many different types of music, a substantial numerical selection, and competetive pricing, you just have to go with it until you're able to move somewhere that has more independent stores. |

| | I have used all of the majors on the net: CDNow, EveryCD, CD Universe, H & B Direct. Any of these are superior to the local sources (Little Rock, AR) because of selection and availability. To order locally, it takes 10 days to 2 weeks to get a recording. On the net, 10 days will be the max. The best services I have had is CDNow, the best prices is EveryCD. Happy shopping, jazzboes! |

| | I go to B-Sides Records in Madison. They don't have a big selection but it is chosen with care and taste. They will also order from small labels etc. I get a lot of Soulnote, and Black Saint recordings there. They have good prices and in general my policy is that if you see a great small label recording you might as well pick it up - you don't know if you'll ever see it again (especially foreign labels). A dollar or two one way or another is not a concern - in the long run what does it matter if you picked up a great CD. I like to see a CD, and pick it up, and read the info etc. I enjoy looking through CD bins etc. |

| | Asides of the large stores like Tower,J&R in NYC,Rose in Chicago where you can comfortably browse I was most impressed by Japanese stores wholly dedicated to jazz-no fringe or fusion in their racks. The unique thing was some real strange titles of CDs of unsung artistes who occupied a significant part of the racks. The most tragic was the fact that it was all in japanese and noone around could help. One of the stores was totally dedicated to vinyl and boy the music was rare and the condition of the records was mint.Prices in all cases were steep. The experience was exhilirating.Ashwin I havent seen this anywhere else |

| | CD World usually has the best prices on the Web now, though I've shopped at Amazon, CD Now, CD Universe, Artist Direct & even buy.com occassionally to locate a hard-to-find item. The Columbia House & BMG music clubs are actually the cheapest if you can structure your purchases to take maximum advantage of their sales (and avoid accepting automatic shipments of items you don't want), but their selection is somewhat limited. The Jazz Heritage club is not as good on price but is a good source for otherwise out-of-print CDs. Your local used CD store is also a good place to save money. |

| | CDNOW has been very helpful in discovering new music. When you look up an artist you can go to "other credits", which lists the available recordings by other artists on which he or she played. Also the "CDNow Recommends" function has been very useful in bringing things to my attention. My one complaint is that there are a lot of bugs in their web site that can drive you crazy. |

| | Update: CD World is out of business. AB-CD is good for locating hard to find items. Cheap CDs currently has the best prices on the Web. Half.com is also a great place to find stuff below retail. |
