If you could recommend five Brazilian Jazz CDs to a newbie, what would they be?

Date:  28-Nov-1998 08:54:06
From:  Alvaro Neder (soundmaker@geocities.com)
"Getz/Gilberto", for bossa nova sounds; "Quarteto Novo", same name of the group with Hermeto Pascoal and Airto Moreira, for jazz over Northeastern rhythms; "Luiz Eça Trio" with great pianist Luiz Eça and "Aquarela do Brasil" with Zimbo Trio for a glimpse over two wonderful Brazilian trios; "Aldeia" for big-band sounds of Banda Mantiqueira in a jazz-choro setting.

I would like to add the following albums:

MOACIR SANTOS - Coisas - Forma
Although it is delected, there are rumors it will be reissued on next year. It is an indispensable record. In my opinion, Moacir Santos, who lives in the United States since 1964, is the most original Brazilian composer. He fused Brazilian melodies and African rhythms with success and his arrangements shows his endless imagination. Recorded in 1965.

ERLON CHAVES - Sabadabada - Continental
The late maestro, pianist, composer and arranger Erlon Chaves led a medium big band with some of the best Brazilian musicians with superb results. The arrangements have a big amount of swing and the soloists (among them Raul de Souza, Hector Costita, Kuntz Wagner, Papudinho and Chaves hinself) puts their hearts off on this record. The title track, an original Chaves composition, in the Tadd Dameron vein,is one lyrical and beautiful melodies ever written in Brazil. Recorded in 1964.

LAURINDO ALMEIDA-BUD SHANK - Brazilian Vol. 1 - Pacific Jazz An indispensable record. For the first time on record, Brazilian music and jazz were fused with total success. This record influenced almost all the Brazilian musicians of the generation that germinated bossa nova. Almeida paved the way for Brazilian guitarists suggesting the new beat that marked the new rhythm, Shank played with great understanding of the music and his driving investigation of BAIÃO (the title was converted as the name of a Northern Brazilian style) he has a real fiery solo. Luiz Gonzaga, Baião's composer was literally transfixied when hear Shank solo, saying he never would expect someone played his song like Shank.

Alvaro's selections are right on, IMHO; they provide an excellent overview of the Braz-jazz scene.

I would add that you can't go wrong with any Zimbo Trio recording. A number of their CDs (both new and reissues) are easily found on the MoviePlay label, which offers the added advantage of being more budget-friendly than most Brazilian imports.

And if you're willing to expand your basic discography to six items, look for recordings of the jazz ensemble Azymuth. That should round out your collection nicely.

I've just ordered in the album "otumbro" by Azymuth. Is this their best album? I heard the track "Dear Limmertz" on a compilation CD, and want to hear more of their stuff. Can anybody recommend other Brazilian jazz/funk/fusion bands?

this is unique music though is not jazz
"fellini - Tres lugares diferentes"
a collective personal music. that´s what makes it so great and a real revolution. cause the only way to do it is to explore and have fun with (in) your self. and gather your friends
it´s impossible to imitate. beware the music is dreaming

I heard an incredible 2 hour radio show of the music of Radames Gnattali, I have searched the web and not much exists.

I hit a quartet and pardon the spelling, quarteto da pariba, (it's close) had 2 tracks by him and this album sounded wonderful, then my PC went out before I bookmarked it and I've never found it again. I'm a beginning jazz vocalist and my husband is a classical & jazz guitarist and would love both of these artists, any sites or album reccomendations?

How come it's called Latin? Do all the singers in Brazil sing in Latin? My father was an alter boy when he was young and he said all the masses were in Latin. Do singers in Brazil just sing music in Latin? And they dance to it?

It would be an easier task to recommend 5 artists, but if 5 brazilian jazz albums is the request then my five choices would be as follows:

1. Quarteto Novo - this self-titled album is incredible
2. Joyce - Feminina - simply beautiful
3. Sambalanco Trio - 1 of 2 self-titled albums from 1964
4. Tamba Trio - self-titled debut by these musician/singers
5. Joyce - Agua e Luz - another gorgeous album

The lines between different styles of music in Brasil are significantly blurred in my opinion. I would like to have added Jorge Ben to my list, but he is not classified as a jazz artist. enjoy!

A very difficult choice, there are so many great albums
to choose from and unfortunately the vast majority are
out of print. Here goes:
1. Edison Machado & Samba Novo. If Art Blakey were
Brazilian, this would be the record that he would make.
Recorded in 1965 and just recently re-released in
Brazil, this record has incredible energy and features
some of the finest musicians of the time: Paulo Moura,
Pedro Paulo, Edson Maciel, Tenorio Jr., J.T. Meireles.
2. Hermeto Pascoal - zabumbe-bum-a. 1978. One of
Hermeto's great records.
3. Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo - Lagoa da Canoa
Município de Arapiraca. 1984. There is no one better
than Hermeto and this may be his best recording. His
group is in top form and the CD is filled with all his
trademark touches: Humor, found sounds, complex
arrangements, warmth, intelligence, and lots of energy.
4. Egberto Gismonti. Nó Caipira. Egberto mixes strong
instrumental performances with gorgious orchestral
settings, all woven together seamlessly. Stunning.
5. Wayne Shorter with Milton Nascimento - Native
Dancer. While not technically a Brazilian record, this
recording is nevertheless the greatest collaboration
ever between US and Brazilian musicians.

All above are quite nice but Jane Duboc's ones are greater.
Just hear her voice to undestand why...
