| | "Vencedores do Premio Visa de MPB Instrumental", the album recorded after this competition; this first album has the two first winners, André Mehmari (piano) and Célio Barros (upright bass). Both young and talented musicians. |

| | Alvaro, I always had difficulties in founding Brazilian jazz CDs here in Italy. But now, along with Tangarà, Kuarup Records which is discounting their articles up to Christmas is helping me to broaden my listening. Sooner I'll be listening to : "Enfim Solo" -- Sivuca (accordion, piano, acoustic guitar and vocal) "Bons Encontros" -- Marco Pereira & Cristovão Bastos "Jazz Brasil" -- João Carlos Assis Brasil (piano) What do you think about these musicians? I've purchased also a CD by Paulo Sérgio Santos, Mauricio Carrilho and Pedro Amorim (titled "O Trio"), but I don't know if it would be jazz or not. They three seem to be working as choro musicians, but I know they often do something more than that. |

| | Romanica, O Trio's music is not jazz but latter-day choro. The members of this group are some of the most accomplished choro musicians in Brazil. They're often found accompanying vocalists on a wide variety of recordings. Their Trio work puts a modern twist onto a traditional musical form that got its start about the same time that jazz was being born. Incidentally, the members of O Trio, along with cavaquinista Luciana Rabello (Raphael's sister), have recently started their own recording company called Acari. The first recording completed at Acari was a disc of Maurício Carrilho's father, a flutist who happens to be the great Altamiro Carrilho's brother. The second recording is Luciana Rabello's first solo album. |

| | Does it have to be new? If so, I heartily recommend Joyce's 'Astronauta: Songs of Elis' (Blue Jackel BJAC 5029-2). It's one of those records where not a wrong step has been taken. The repertoire, consisting of songs sung by Elis Regina, is flawless. Joyce's singing is perfect. The arrangements and executions are perfect. Even the booklet photos are perfect. In addition to Joyce (vocals and guitar), the musicians are Rodolfo Stroeter (bass), Tutti Moreno (drums), Guello (percusison), and guests Joe lovano (tenor sax), Mulgrew Miller (piano), Renee Rosnes (piano), Romero Lubambo (guitar), and Dori Caymmi (voice & guitar). A beautiful album. |

| | I won tickets to hear a Brazilian female jazz musician whose name I can't remember. I heard her music on the radio from "Three Americas" CD--It's gorgeous and I'm looking forward to the concert. Wish I had more background information! |

| | My brazilian CDs of the moment include Charlie Byrd's " My inspiration" which is just great, and features New York's Trio da Paz, and also the most recent Trio da Paz record called "Partido Out". I'm looking for more new stuff though. I think I'll pick up Joyce's newest. Check out Malandro Records, they have a few good Brazilian things out. |

| | Brazilian artists Dori Caymmi, Marcelo Zarvos and Ivan Lins are all hits with me on their new releases. Caymmi's, "Cinema: A Romantic Vision" is on Zebra Records; Marcelo Zarvos' "Labyrinths" is on MA Records and the fabulous Ivan Lins is "Live at MCG" on Heads Up International. Great Brazilian music...appreciated around the world. |

| | I would like to sugest to the friends of brazilian music the recent releases of Malandro Record(http://www.brazilianjazz.com),specialy Rabo de Lagartixa. That is a good sample of what's going on among young brasilian musicians. As basical recordings I will sugest Tábua de Esmeraldas or O Bidu, by Jorge Benjor(Samba Pop from the seventies) and any recording by Paulinho da Viola. As a matter of fact I will make a little list of what I think is fundamental to me in brazilian music. See you soon! |
