Allen Toussaint, who helped develop the sounds of countless
artists and performers, is truly a master of the studio.
Having influenced most of the world without them even
knowing it. Toussaints' amazing catalog of work extends into
the very soul of popular music through generations of jazz,
country, soul, rock & roll, r & b, and blues.
Truly an inspiriation, he has steadily forged new musical
ground while utilizing the New Orleans sound as a driving
force in his style. If you are an arranger, composer, sound
engineer, or artist, you would be well served by listening
to his recorded accomplishments.
My personal favorites.
"sneaking sally through the alley" Robert Palmer
"Brother" Dr John
"Lady Marmalade" Patti Labelle
"Uptown rulers" The Meters
"Southern Nights" Allen Toussaint
yours musically, Daniel Fl

Allan Toussaint's song "Sneaking Sally Through the Alley" is also performed by Phish in concert. They began to cover the song in the latter half of the '80s, but it's apperance took a long hiatus during the '90s until 12/30/97 when Phish broke the song out as the show opener to a sold out Madison Square Garden. After an inspired two set performance Phish once again jammed out "Sneakin' Sally" as the first song of a classic four song encore in which they welcome New Years Eve day.

I had always thought that the song was written by Robert Plant before now.

I'm a working pianist in Atlanta. I recently heard Allen Toussaint in concert in New orleans. I was completely blown away! He did a song that I think was called "Hang on"? I am not familiar with it and would like to find more about it. Does anyone know anything about it, and where can I find a list of songs that Allen has written?
Thanks,
Fran Irwin

Allen Toussaint's work has graced the albums of many popular and extremely talanted artists. One artist is Bonnie Raitt, who recorded two Toussaint songs, one in 1974 off the Streetlights album entitled "What is Success" and the second song in 1975 album HomePlate entitled " What Do You Want The Boy To Do." If your a fan of Toussaint, check them out.
I only wish she would record more of his songs today.

Sometime back in early 1974,I saw my all time favorite band
Little Feat at the Beacon theather in NYC.
Allen Toussaint and the Meters were the opening band, and to say the least the audience were sufficently primed for the Feat.
Anyone else remeber this show?

Does anyone know where to get a copy of Allen Toussaint playing Brickyard Blues?
Greetings to other fans (especially the Little Feat follower) from Down Under in Australia.

Little Feat still covers On Your Way Down. They did it quite a bit last year.

And all those covers of Allen Toussaint by Robert Palmer included at least one feat member doin' session work.

I have to say that two other great performances to check out are "Shoorah Shoorah" and "Play Something Sweet" from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (1976) album - I believe RHINO put this out on LP at the time, and there was a CD re-release in 1989, but I have been searching in vain for a copy of this. Anybody have a lead?

Check out Toussaint's fantastic horn arrangements on The Band's Rock of Ages album -- considering the Band did not usually (need to) rely on horns etc. to augment their sound, Toussaint's arrangements did a beautiful job to round out the material.

I had no idea Toussaint did the horn arrangements on "Rock of Ages". I've always loved the horns on "Don't do it". Does anyone know of a compilation of all the songs he wrote for others (Dorsey, etc.)? That would be a great item.

There is a movie called "Piano players rarely play together" which gave me 1st hand love for the music, & the legacy. Would like to jam with Allen someday. I'm an as yet unknown 48 yr old blues, jazz & rock harmonica player. From the breif bio of him on the web page, I learned that Allen once worked with Albert King? One of my best musical memories, is at Cafe-Au-Go-Go, on Bleeker St., when I was 16 years old(@1968). Albert was playing with his band. I went back stage , introduced myself to him, & played him some on my harp. He liked my sound, invited me up on stage to jam,(which invitation, I most gladly accepted), & went on to play the next three songs in a row! Yow. If this message should get through to Allen, I hope you like good soulful harp in the Little Walter-Butterfield-Howlin'Wolf tradition, cause' they are my mentors, & thats how I play. Would be honored to get through to this great man, & also say that I was deeply touched by the sincerity & respect in "piano-players". Since it was filmed in the early 70's, I've got a feeling that "Toots" may have passed on? What a great, & kick-ass N'Orleans Piano Man! There is a song he plays that sounds alot like what someone else claimed, as "Honky-Tonkin'" I've got a feelin "Toots" may have learned it from his mentor,(?) if he did not in fact, write it himself. If I was given piano lessons by anyone I could choose, Allen Toussaint, & Leon Russell would be who I'd go to. Sincerely, Tom Spinner 5/4/00

I'm looking for a recording on CD or vinyl of the song to Fess that is featured in Piano Players rarely play together video. Can anyone help? Does anybody know of an Allen Toussaint discography - either on the web or in a magazine?

I haven't been able to find cd or vinyl version of Palfi's *Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together*, but I have found the video - just now! at aligator.com. my life has been blessed, as I knew Tuts Washington well, and had the opportunity to meet and chat with the Fess during one of his very last live gigs... both remarkable men. never met Mr. Toussaint, but one of his business partners in the late '70s.... I would recommend this film to anyone who loves New Orleans music!
