Lenny Pickett with the UMO Jazz Orchestra: The Prescription
Lenny Pickett è stato membro distintivo dei Tower of Power per il decennio 1972-81, direttore musicale della Saturday Night Live Band fino al 1995, collaboratore di David Bowie}}, Elton John, David Byrne, Lenny Kravitz, il gruppo Little Feat e molti altri. Nonostante questo, il sassofonista ha inciso pochissimo a suo nome e questo è appena il secondo disco da leader.
Lo accompagna la nota big-band finlandese diretta da Rich Shemaria, con cui ha avuto modo di collaborare negli ultimi anni: dopo un primo incontro nel 2006 a Helsinki, due anni dopo si sono esibiti al festival di Pori e poi nel luglio 2012 sono entrati in sala d'incisione.

Questo è il risultato: un'ora di musica che privilegia torridi blues, con il sassofonista che evidenzia le caratteristiche più eccitanti del suo stile, in particolare l'uso del registo più estremo del suo strumento sul modello David Sanborn. Ascoltando il brano d'apertura, dove Pickett è affiancato dalla chitarra elettrica di Teemu Viinikainen, sembra di compiere un viaggio spazio- temporale in qualche regione del Sud degli Stati Uniti tre o quattro decenni fa. Per la verità i brani successivi sono piuttosto variopinti e includono lente ballad, momenti di R&B orchestrale o temi classicamente swinganti, dando spazio a citazioni hendrixiane e climi soulful anni sessanta.

Non c'è molto altro da dire. La UMO Jazz Orchestra si conferma un organico di gran classe, strumentalmente impeccabile e capace di calore. Lenny Pickett uno specialista nel suo genere.
