Brad Turner Quintet: The Magnificent
Brad Turner's album The Magnificent is a sonic gem on which he invites listeners on a musical journey which effortlessly balances tradition and innovation. Comprising a wish-list of stellar musicians, including guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Neil Swainson, drummer Quincy Davis and, on four tracks, tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds, the band gathered together to record a session to breathe life into nine Turner compositions.

The opening track is "You're OK," in which Turner's trumpet takes center stage with his velvety tone. Solo space was carved out for Bernstein and Swainson to show they are interested players and provide a taste of what is to come. Tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds is brought into the hard-swinging composition "Barney's Castle," in which the Turner & Weeds front line cleverly navigates the intricate melody. Bernstein's virtuosity is evident in his opening statement and continues with his subsequent comping and soloing. Both Turner and Weeds exhibit command over their instruments with inventive improvisations.

It is evident that Turner's trumpet is the guiding star through most of this album; his accomplishment as a pianist is also evidenced in three compositions, including "Virtue Signals." Structured as a descending complete chromatic scale, it opens with an exciting unison section with Turner and Bernstein teasing and elusive in approach. Within the frame, the number has an internal coherence which shapes the musical form for the musicians to be free to develop their ideas. The next track is "To Begin, Begin," which exemplifies the excellence of bassist Neil Swainson. The number opens with a bass figure which appears simple but complex, such as Swainson's technique. While Turner's playing is captivating throughout the number, Swainson holds the chart together with his bass line full of inventive twists.

There are two live performances in this release, both recorded at Frankie's Jazz Club in Vancouver, BC. The first is the title track, "The Magnificent." The structure, ensemble passages, and improvisation are meant to be an homage to the timeless spirit of Thad Jones. The return of Cory Weeds to the front line is a testament to the power of collaboration, with his elegantly formed solos. Bernstein and Turner exhibit a musical connection that is palpable in every note. The other live track is the closer "Rosemary." It is a flag waver with Quincy Davis in total control. In this free- floating chart, Turner has created an open frame which allows players to explore all the nooks and crannies their imaginations take them to. In conclusion, the album is an exciting display of curiosity, virtuosity, and creativity which should have broad listener appeal.
