Deliziosi. Si chiamano EarRegulars perchè si esibiscono ogni domenica sera all'Ear Inn, il più antico working bar di New York City, al 326 di Spring Street.
I leader sono il trombettista Jon-Erik Kellso e il chitarrista Matt Munisteri che aggregano vari e differenti partner proponendo un jazz fondato sull'estetica pre boppistica: dixieland e classic jazz.
Non sono gli unici a farlo ma la differenza sta nella qualità della proposta musicale. In genere i gruppi di tradizionalisi presentano una musica ingessata, spesso tecnicamente e artisticamente mediocre. La musica degli Ear Regulars è invece variopinta e frizzante, i due leader sono musicisti di prim'ordine e si circondano di validi partner.

Jon-Erik Kellso ha da poco superato la cinquantina e da giovane non ha privilegiato la sperimentazione d'avanguardia ma uno sguardo retrospettivo, volto a esaltare i valori musicali della tradizione. Si è stabilito a New York nel 1989 ed ha suonato con gli ultimi grandi e gli specialisti del jazz d'anteguerra: da Milt Hinton, Bob Haggart e Dick Hyman a Wynton Marsalis e Ken Peplowski.
Molto più vasta e articolata è invece la formazione di Munisteri, che attraversa i generi con straordinaria competenza e fantasia: country, blues, popular music, mainstream jazz e ultimamente musette.

Passando al disco notiamo subito che non è stato inciso dal vivo all'Ear Inn come ci saremmo aspettati ma in uno studio di Berlino nel marzo 2014 in occasione di un tour in Germania ed Ungheria. Comunque ciò che conta è la musica, che è sempre d'alto livello. Con i due leader suonano il sassofonista Scott Robinson e il contrabbassista Greg Cohen. Il più "irregolare" dei quattro è Munisteri ma -come s'è detto -un po' tutti evitano tentazioni filologiche e guardano alla tradizione d'anteguerra con rispetto ma anche con po' di disincanto.
Ne risulta una musica fresca e ispirata, che mette alla prova la nostra capacità di giudizio rispetto a linguaggi che qualcuno giudica superati.
