Vocal

Teachers and/or influences?
Dr. Marvin Regier

I knew I wanted to be a musician when...
I was 5 years old and I knew I wanted to sing. My parents owned a music school and mom was a classical piano teacher and dad was a classically trained guitarist with a 60´s rock band background. I never wanted to do anything else.

Your sound and approach to music:
I love what I would call modern contemporary vocal jazz. To me this means great modern harmony, interesting new exiting rhythms and cultural variations (Latin jazz etc.)

Your dream band:
I am so lucky to already work with my dream jazz quartet/quintet: Gianny Laredo, Ruben Oyalvides, Carlos Hernandez and Enrique Fernandez.

Road story: Your best or worst experience:
Oh, gosh! I was singing in Tramonto Wine Bar in Cancun, Mexico and as I finished performing I was making my way through the restaurant area beside the bar and literally slipped and fell right on my rear in front of all of the guests who were enjoying their elegant meals. I am rather tall at 6 feet and I really believe that I looked like a particularly clumsy giraffe with high heals on an ice skating rink as the floor had just been polished. My feet went right out from under me! To say the least, embarrassment is an excellent pain killer. I did not even feel the bruises till the next day!

Favorite venue:
My favorite performance was definitely the in Jazz Plaza 29, International Jazz Festival Havana, Cuba. It was amazing to sing in the Jardines of the Mella Theater. There were so many Jazz Lovers from all over the world!

Your favorite recording in your discography and why?
I love Forever; it makes me feel like I am expressing part of my soul, part of my life story.

The first Jazz album I bought was:
Dianne Reeves A Little Moonlight (Blue Note, 2003).

What do you think is the most important thing you are contributing musically?
The lyrics to our album Forever are by far my most lovely contribution. I put all of my inspiration, love, learning and wisdom into creating the ideas for the songs.

Did you know...
The Mexican, Cuba and Canadian cultures that I have experienced have opened my mind and given me a perspective in life that has changed the way I look at the world.

CDs you are listening to now:
Tierney Sutton, Sophie Milman, Jane Monheit

How would you describe the state of jazz today?
Jazz is getting new, inventive and exiting!

What are some of the essential requirements to keep jazz alive and growing?
Teaching people about new jazz harmonies and why we like new interesting sounds that becomes so addictive to the ear.

What is in the near future?
A new album of piano and voice duets with Gianny Laredo.

What's your greatest fear when you perform?
I just open my heart so much, sometimes I don´t want to look directly into peoples eyes because I can feel them inside my heart and not everyone is feeling nice things. What I do is try to scan out my audience and find the special people with wonderful loving energy and focus on those faces and try to skip over the troubled souls.

What song would you like played at your funeral?
I don´t want a funeral. If I am gone, well, I am gone, so you just got to let me go!

What is your favorite song to whistle or sing in the shower?
"Make Someone Happy."

By Day:
I sang "Someone To Watch Over Me" every day until I met my special prince!

If I weren't a jazz musician, I would be a:
Sorry, I just can't imagine being anything else. I guess I would have to sing pop but it would really be agonizing!
