Cecil Young: On Coming Home
by Paul Rauch
The long journey home holds special meaning for all those that brave the elements of their past, and engage them with the clear identity of the present. This is certainly the case for New York-based trumpeter Cecil Young as he sets autumn flight for his native Seattle to perform at the newly founded Seattle Jazz Fellowship. ...
Clifford Jordan: Drink Plenty Water
by Dave Linn

Sadly, the label folded in 1975, and the album was never released. Now, 49 years later, Drink Plenty Water, has finally seen the light ...

The process of selecting the ...

Crusaders
Active since:
The Crusaders were a prominent jazz fusion group that originally formed in Houston, Texas, in 1960. They initially went by the name "The Jazz Crusaders" and were known for their hard bop and soul jazz style. The original members of the group included Wilton Felder (saxophone), Wayne Henderson (trombone), Joe Sample (piano), Stix Hooper (drums), and Hubert Laws (flute).
In the late 1960s, the band began to shift their musical style towards jazz fusion and soul jazz, and they dropped the "Jazz" from their name, becoming simply "The Crusaders." This change reflected their move towards a more electric and groove-oriented sound.
Eumir Deodato: Os Catedraticos 73
by Chris M. Slawecki
In 1973, Eumir Deodato was riding high upon the GRAMMY® Award-winning success of Also Sprach Zarathurstra (Theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey)," the Brazilian keyboardist's jazz-rock fusion take on Richard Strauss' classic, from his previous release Prelude (CTI, 1972). Deodato's next move, Os Catedráticos 73 doesn't mess with that successful formula but throws a ...

Marcus Miller: America's AmBASSadoor
by Jim Worsley
Marcus Miller is most often described as a jazz, funk, soul, fusion, and R&B bassist. As much as that is accurate, it is a description that falls well short of the mark. Miller is a high-end musical sponge who manages to incorporate today's cultures and rhythms into his compositions, layered within the framework of sound he ...
