Due to her remarkable vocal and concert-kantele technique, she has been described as sounding like a whole orchestra all by herself. She is now recording her own compositions with the legendary record company ECM. She was born in Kirkenær in southeastern Norway in 1961, and studied piano, guitar and contemporary folksong. In 1981 she discovered the instrument kantele, which would become her primary musical interest along with singing. 2019: Striking A Balance In Review, Part 1
by Henning Bolte
Part 1 | Part 2 Every year the 'Best-of' game is underway again. But, best of what?" is the immediate question. It's almost impossible for fishes of prey to hunt in a huge herring swarm, or for birds of prey to hunt in those huge budgerigar swarms. 'The best' is a choice from the ...

ECM e le voci: Theo Bleckmann e Sinikka Langeland
by Mario Calvitti
by Mark Sullivan
Rímur are songs in the unique Icelandic tradition of rhyming narrative verse. Transmitted orally for centuries, in the twentieth century they were recorded and transcribed by ethnographers and folk song collectors. They form part of the inspiration for this music, along with chants, folk songs, religious hymns, and fiddle tunes. There's also an emphasis on improvisation, ...

Trygve Seim: Rumi Songs
by Mark Sullivan
Norwegian saxophonist Trygve Seim may lack the marquee status of countryman (and fellow ECM artist) Jan Garbarek. But he is no less adventurous, and has recently been popping up all over on 2016 ECM releases: on Mats Eilertsen's Rubicon; with Sinikka Langeland and the Trio Medieval on The Magical Forest; with Iro Haarla and symphony orchestra ...
