Scott Clark

Drummer and composer, Scott Clark keeps time in the balance. His performances behind the kit are generous and empathetic, establishing his voice immediately upon striking the surface. It is rare to find art that is both formally rigorous and aesthetically vital, but Clark thrives in this project, engineering frameworks for lucid, active songs, drawing on the performances of his collaborators and the weight of his subject matter. A series of jazz suites have emerged from the study of his own Native ancestry, beginning with Bury My Heart (2016) written in response to Dee Brown’s book of the same title, and continuing with ToNow (2018) written as a contribution to the Standing Rock protests and the unlawful construction of an oil pipeline across Native land

Mankwe Ndosi, Marc Johnson & Damien Kingston

Read "Mankwe Ndosi, Marc Johnson & Damien Kingston" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

Mankwe Ndosi is not a singer (more like a true vocal artist!!!) that was familiar to me, but she certainly is now. Her recording Felt/Not Said is strikingly different. Scott Clark: To Now

Read "To Now" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Il disco, coperto da quattro ampie composizioni dello stesso Clark, è stato in effetti inciso a strettissimo ...

Scott Clark 4tet: Bury My Heart

Read "Bury My Heart" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Richmond, VA., resident Scott Clark is a drummer who projects a lot of get-up-and-go during these jaunty progressive jazz works, inspired by his Native American ancestry. Hence, the 4tet and guest artists execute a set framed on Native American incidents largely based on hardships and trauma but Clark's manifesto also proffers hope. The six ...
