Michael League

Michael League is a Grammy Award-winning bassist, guitarist, composer, arranger, producer, label owner, and bandleader based out of Brooklyn, New York. As a military brat, he grew up all over the place. Michael attended the University of North Texas' jazz studies program for 4 years, then moved to nearby Dallas for another 3 years, where he worked with some of the most influential figures in modern gospel, R&B, and soul music, and was mentored by legendary keyboardist Bernard Wright (Miles Davis, Chaka Khan). Michael runs the band with a grass-roots approach to the changing music industry that seems crazy, but has worked

Read "Fabia Mantwill Orchestra: Whirl the Wheel" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

German saxophonist Fabia Mantwill is also an adventurous composer and arranger for large ensembles. Her new album, In.Sight, is her most ambitious to date--a wide-ranging and deeply imaginative project recorded with the Fabia Mantwill Orchestra, which features a vibrant mix of young players from Berlin's buzzing jazz scene. Fabia Mantwill Orchestra: In.Sight

Read "In.Sight" reviewed by Neil Duggan

Slow, haunting strings usher listeners into Fabia Mantwill Orchestra's ambitious album In.Sight. This bold statement involves a 32-piece orchestra with six virtuoso soloists, performing compositions co-written by Mantwill, Snarky Puppy's Michael League and Greek composer Magdalini Giannikou. The album opens with “Satoyama," where those melancholic strings gradually bloom into bright melodic passages. The piece ...

Negli anni passati i ...

I Dischi del 2024 secondo Ludovico Granvassu

Read "I Dischi del 2024 secondo Ludovico Granvassu" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Ludovico Granvassu's Garden of Jazzy Delights 2024

Read "Ludovico Granvassu's Garden of Jazzy Delights 2024" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Have you noticed how many “best of the year" listicles start with an apologetic preamble ("these are not necessarily 'the best albums of the year' but 'my favorites';" “it's all subjective;" “tomorrow I might have chosen different titles;" “I could only select ten albums" etc.)? Those disclaimers channel the writer's discomfort of having to summarize a ...

Jazzkaar 2024

Read "Jazzkaar 2024" reviewed by Martin Longley

Jazzkaar Telliskivi Creative City Tallinn, Estonia April 21-28, 2024 Customarily, the almost-always April placement of the Jazzkaar festival is accompanied by a goodly beaming of spring-flavored sunshine, perhaps infected by the odd murky downpour, but soon drying off its feathers. Instead, during 2024's 35th edition, Tallinn's wondrous eight-dayer ...
