Inspired by stride pianist, humorist vocalist Fats Waller on 10" LP's that included Al Casey-rhythm guitar, Herman Autrey-trumpet and Al Hall-string bass (I met them later in person), I learned to play clarinet in the Dover, NJ HS Marching Band. Fascinated with Sousa marches it didn't take me long to discover that Benny Goodman's clarinet style originated with Jimmy Noone and searched for the roots of clarinets' style that led me from Eddie Condon's friends in Chicago back to Algiers clarinetists in New Orleans. Started a HOT BLUES & JAZZ BAND in San Francisco in the '80's playing with Ragtime pianist Burt Bales, trumpeter Robin Hodes and jammed with Carl Lunsford, Ray Shelbred, Mal Sharpe and Turk Murphy.
