Christoph Irniger Pilgrim

Active since:

The quintet Pilgrim, founded by Zurich based tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger, has become over the years one of the most exciting ensembles in young European Jazz. On the occasion of their 10-year anniversary they will present their fifth album "Ghost Cat" on Intakt Records in January 2023. In their gorgeously considered, but luxuriantly open music the quintet uses ambiguity as a tool. Some compositions are freely improvised, while others are completely notated, yet most lie in between, with an elasticity that reflects a life of freedom, where informed choices are made spontaneously. The accompanying soundtrack oscillates between enigmatic reflection and wild eruptions, although the band creates a dense, all-round sound which is hard to categorise.

Christoph Irniger Pilgrim: Human Intelligence (Live)

Read "Human Intelligence (Live)" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Christoph Irniger's Pilgrim: Human Intelligence (live)

Read "Human Intelligence (live)" reviewed by Mark Corroto

"The one thing I concluded was not to try and reproduce a live event--I thought, live goals are different. There might be more improvisation, more risk," Christoph Irniger reflects in the liner notes to Pilgrim's 2023 studio album Ghost Cat (Intakt). The saxophonist and composer reinforces the idea with this electrifying live recording, captured at Red ...

"Back in the Game" was recorded live in November 2023 at Red Horn District in Bad Meinberg, Germany and appears on the album Human Intelligence Live (Out in March 2025 on Intakt Records). The official music video is by Kohei Yamaguchi and features the Japanese dancer Mamiko Hosokawa. The song was first released on the album Italian Circus Story by Christoph Irniger Pilgrim and is always good to close the set, since it has a quality of an exit music for a film. With Christoph Irniger: tenor saxophone; Stefan Aeby: piano; Dave Gisler: guitar; Raffaele Bossard: double bass; and Michael Stulz: drums.

Christoph Irniger Pilgrim: Crosswinds

Read "Crosswinds" reviewed by Don Phipps

With Crosswinds, Christoph Irniger's quartet Pilgrim offers a scintillating trip into a musical subconscious --a dream state where one opens doors only to find more doors --a spiral staircase where the top is always just beyond reach. For the most part, the album consists of tunes that are both sparse yet engaging. And it is this ...

Musician

Christoph Irniger

Born:

Christoph Irniger, born 1979, is a Swiss saxophonist, composer and bandleader. According to the Sunday edition of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung he is “undoubtedly one of the greatest talents of his generation.” In recent years, Irniger has made a name for himself in a range of line-ups, playing jazz, rock and related musical styles. As a musician from a generation which likes to work on multiple projects in eclectic styles, he leads a range of outfits, all distinct and surprising musically. The Swiss magazine Jazz ’N‘ More writes: “He comes up with something new each time by leaving the beaten tracks of sound. He doesn’t just look briefly left and right; he fights his way into the thicket.” An instrumentalist with a firm education, and a composer with an artistic vision, he consistently generates new ideas, realised thanks to a passion for music. German magazine Jazzthetik says: “People who know about jazz will confirm that he is one of the most promising musicians in contemporary Swiss jazz.”
