David Haney: Stix and Stones (Piano and Drum Duets)
Il sessantenne pianista californiano David Haney raccoglie in questo album fresco di stampa una serie di duetti unicamente con batteristi, per l'esattezza cinque, riunendo incisioni realizzate fra il 2003 e il 2014 in Belgio, Canada e ovviamente Stati Uniti. Di quasi tutto il materiale, il pianista è anche autore o coautore (di regola col batterista di turno, quindi in più che probabili duetti del tutto improvvisati), con due brani ("Pretty Prancing Woman" e "House Party Starting"), invece, provenienti dal songbook di Herbie Nichols.

Il duetto piano-batteria, anche per un fatto squisitamente timbrico, nasconde più di un'insidia, e questo lavoro non ne è che l'ennesima riprova. Vi trovano infatti posto episodi in possesso di una loro autonomia, di una loro precisa ragion d'essere, accanto ad altri, invece, un po' generici, in cui qua e là si avverte la mancanza di un contrabbasso.

Fra i primi segnaleremmo tutti e tre i duetti con l'italo-belga Giovanni Barcella, cioè quelli con una maggiore identità stiilistico-espressiva, vale a dire il vitale "Dolphy's Hat," "Opposites," in avvio più cogitabondo, poi vivifico, articolato, a tratti nervoso, e "Quantum Galopy," segnato da un interscambio particolarmente fitto, e poi ancora "Ticking Time Bomb," denso e libero, fissato accanto a Marvin Smith.

Altrove non si oltrepassa granché un dialogare anche apprezzabile sul piano lessicale quanto a conti fatti prevedibile.
