All About Jazz is celebrating Artie Shaw's birthday today!

Artie Shaw, a brilliant jazz clarinetist, was one of the most enigmatic, daring and adventurous bandleaders of the swing-era. An intellectual, he hated public life and the music industry. Over the course of his short career he formed ten orchestras and disbanding most of them after only a few months. At the peak of his career in the years just before World War II...
I'm not sure why the jazz duo of Dwike Mitchell and Willie Ruff weren't better known in the '50s and '60s, when they did most of their recording&#151or why they still aren't household names. part of the reason, i suppose, is that the delicate combination of mitchell (piano) and ruff (french horn and bass) wasn't exactly a happening sound back then. delicate and sensitive with touches of classical influence, the duo's jazz wasn't pop flavored in the late '50s or expressive and excessive in the '60s. today i suspect they aren't well known because most of their albums haven't been released digitally.A...

Tonight, singer-pianist Freddy Cole and tenor saxophonist Harry Allen team up for the first of four evenings continuing through Saturday at Jazz at the Bistro. For some videos of Allen performing, and a link to an earlier video post about Cole, see this post from a couple of weeks ago...

Jazz singer-songwriter teams with m: Jeff Lorber for a deeply personal album about the demise of her marriage

Los Angeles, CA: Thinking that everything had fallen apart, the tears streamed down Carol Duboca€(TM)s face as she wrote the lyrics to a€oeSmile,a€ the title track to the soulful jazz vocalista€(TM)s stunning sixth album that was released Tuesday (May 21) by Gold Note Music. She gazed at her young daughtera€(TM)s smile and found hope. Hope infuses the painfully honest and courageously candid collection Duboc penned and produced with fusion pioneer Jeff Lorber about coming to terms with the end of her marriage. The shuffling beats of the funky first single, a€oeElephant,a€ one of Billboard BDSradioa€(TM)s most added tracks this week, elusively dances around the realization that she and her husband faced: the amassed problems in the marriage were the elephant that could no longer be ignored...

Jutta Hipp is another forgotten '50s jazz pianist with an odd past. She recorded briefly but gave up on jazz in 1956 for reasons that remain mysterious. The German-born Hipp spent her teens under Nazi rule and performed in Germany after the war. She recorded in Germany sporadically from 1952 to '55, and a year later she caught the ear of producer Leonard Feather, who was in Duisburg, Germany. Feather urged Hipp to come to New York...
