I was born into a family of musicians in the UK whereby my parents had a
big band playing six nights per week for thirty years. Both my brothers and
I were encouraged at an early age to play a musical instrument. (My father
played and hand made a number of instruments including guitar, steel
guitar, accordion and keyboards, my mother had music degrees in piano,
violin and singing) I play guitars and keyboards and croak a bit too.
Whilst many of my friends were listening to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in the sixties I had had an upbringing of the 40's, 50's and 60's sounds ranging from Cole Porter to Stan Getz and most things inbetween. I was fascinated by the bossa nova sound and still am. When I was fifteen I played in bands at college but it was too difficult to get five young hopefuls to rehersals so I started playing records to entertain. A few years later I got the opportunity to travel and work in clubs, hotels and discotheques throughout Europe. In 1977 I went to work for some friends in Canada who knew someone in radio. For five summers I returned to Toronto to work as a "fill in presenter" for jocks who were on holiday. I lived in London during the early 80's playing in clubs and local radio before moving to West Germany for four years in 1986. At the age of 42 I have recently stopped entertaining after a career of some 35 years. I have collected records for 30 years and have quite a good collection. My preferences are fusion, contemporary and latin american although I have experience of a wide gamut in the musical spectrum. My main profession is in marketing and nowadays I enjoy working in my multi-media studio at home with my computers and talking to others on the net with similar tastes and interests. We share music, memorabilia and ideas. I am always interested to hear from any other music fans on the net who would like to have a chat with an old musical seadog. |

Up and coming in my future reviews will be a 90's blend of contemporary,
fusion and latin albums ranging from the new young hopefuls to the
established masters. If you are unaware of the music of Ricardo Silveira,
Turcuato Mariano, Rick Braun, John Pizzarrelli or have missed the abundance
of talent from the land of the rising Honda, stop by when all will be
revealed in the coming months.
Watch out for a special feature on the music of Rio's own Azymuth and other wonderful sounds from Brazil. There will be special features on the great modern vocalists such as Carmen Lundy, LaVerne Butler, Kenny Rankin and the wonderful and much underrated Phil Perry. If you like your jazz smooth and easy with a touch of bossa nova, be sure to tune into my reviews. |
