Herbie Hancock: Future 2 Future - Live
Columbia/Legacy/MX Entertainment and Transparent Music
2002

By Jim Santella

Recorded earlier this year at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles, this DVD performance brings together several of today’s most creative jazz artists in front of a sold-out audience. The program is inspirational. Herbie Hancock’s message is one of adaptation to change and making the best use of technology. Throughout his sextet’s one hour and 44-minute program, the leader ensures that tradition and future growth are equally represented. Terri Lyne Carrington chants from beyond ancient roots. Wallace Roney reminds us of the impact Miles Davis had on our music. Matthew Garrison employs a bass that doubles as a contemporary, electric model as well as a laid-back, stand-up model. Turntable artist DJ Disk adds pertinent percussive effects that the ensemble wears gracefully, while leader Hancock brings it all together masterfully. His acoustic piano artistry never ceases to amaze. Watching it happen on DVD, of course, is the key. Eight cameras were used to get it done right. The casual Knitting Factory audience was pumped up by the night’s excitement. Hancock had them “dancing in their seats.” This isn’t out of the ordinary for that club’s regular events. His Future 2 Future - Live program, however, is a special event. From Sci-Fi effects to R&B pleasures and traditional jazz roots, the event stands apart as one of the year’s best concerts and recordings.
