Jack Bruce and Friends Live is a concert recording captured at the Rockplast in Essen Germany October 18, 1980. In Bruces's employ was his working band in late 1970s. The the very capable Clem Clempson (formerly fo Humble Pie) on guitar, David Sancious (formerly of the E Street as on keybords, and Billy Cobham on drums. The music is mostly from the bassist's Cream days with a smattering of his solo career thrown in. The crowd is large and appreciative and the cinematography is mostly tight and appropriate.
The disc contains interesting extras that include a brief biography of Bruce along with a disography and photo gallery. The main menu is fully anamated and easy to navagate. The results are a mixed bag. This DVD is a complete concert performance, meaning that 100% of the show was devoted to the music performed. On one hand, it is down right nostalgic to hear Bruce sing "White Room" and "Sunshine of your Love." On the other hand, Bruce as 15 years past Cream when this recording was made and his voice betrays that. However, the disc does have its moments. Billy Cobham is outstanding from beginning to end, making his way about his considerable trap set with grace and ease, albiet while on nuclear fire. Clem Clempson provides adequate guitar and bass support and as well does David Sancious on the keyboards. While this DVD is a must for all completist Cream and Jack Bruce fans, it is a bit of an acquired taste.
