| Gary Potter--Hotter than Hot
By C. Michael Bailey
Hotter than Hot is a concert recording detailing the very fine British guitarist Gary Potter and his working trio of rhythm guitarist Nils Solberg and double bassist Andy Crowdy. It is a veritable Django lovefest, a fact for which Potter offers no apology. Potter performs a set of seemingly impossible Reinhardt compositions and stands closely associated with the Gipsy guitarist. This is exuberant music that is a much a pleasure watched performed as heard. Potter modulates between the plectrum, finger picking, single-note and octave playing. He is completely deft at all Reinhardt nuances.
The entire disc is devoted to a small-venue performance with interview material interspersed throughout the performance. The flow of the music and documentary is good, the camera loose and warm and the audio excellent. I highly recommend this to all Djangophiles and jazz fans wanting to experience truly great guitar playing.
