Blues Walk
Tony Genge | Opus 108 Records (2001)

By Stephen Richardson Discuss

One of Canada's leading composers, pianist Tony Genge is joined here by one of the top bassists in the country, Kieran Overs. His incredibly solid feel and smooth walking lock in perfectly with the mature drumming textures of veteran Terry O'Mahoney. This lends the new offering a truly organic and spontaneous feel throughout the album.

From the opening notes of Kenny Drew's "Modal Mood" to Red Garland's "The P.C. Blues," this puppy swings! It pushes ever forward with the concise abandon of a seasoned drunk; precariously ready to fall at times but always maintaining a tenuous balance. These old cats can keep it kicking. Genge's own compositions such as "Away Falls My Heart" are delicate, original and surprising daring in areas. The songs are stellar and they maintain a lively and hoary maturity seldom found in such an elderly pianist.

Track listing: Modal Mood, Surrey with the Fringe on Top, Away Falls My heart, What is This Thing Called Love, Old Folks, The Blues Walk, Little Waltz, D.K.'s Dilemma, Moanin' The P.C. Blues.

Personnel: Tony Genge-Piano; Kieran Overs-Bass; Terry O'Mahoney-Drums
