Just In Time
David Kahn Trio

By Joel Roberts Discuss

This is a thoroughly pleasant trio recording led by California pianist/cosmetic surgeon David Kahn.

The touchstone here is clearly the great Bill Evans trio featuring Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian. Kahn and company (bassist John Witala and drummer Vince Latiano) do a fine job of capturing the quiet elegance and sophistication of Evans' group on a selection of standards plus one Kahn original. The leader, who's studied with the likes of Kenny Werner and Eliane Elias, has a soft, graceful touch at the keyboard and keeps things moving at an even, unhurried tempo. The group has the relaxed, comfortable sound of musicians who've played together often.

While the tunes are familiar ones (perhaps a tad too familiar for seasoned jazz listeners), the trio's interpretations are fresh and lively. A fine effort all around.

Track listing: Just in Time, Blue Bossa, Lester Leaps In, The Very Thought of You, Autumn Leaves, Green Dolphin Street, Beautiful Love, Sue's Song.

Personnel: David Kahn, piano; John Witala, bass; Vince Latiano, drums.

Style: Mainstream/Bop/Hard Bop/Cool
Published: October 01, 2000
