Nate Birkey | Household Ink Records (2001)
There is a mystical quality to Nate Birkey that manifests itself in both his vocals and Trumpet style. Birkey has been compared to both Miles Davis and Chet Baker, and his playing has more than a touch of the former and a whole lot of the latter. And Mr Birkey with a nod to his influences, adds his own message that makes this recording a most enjoyable endeavor.
"I'll Be Seeing You" Nice relaxed vocal. Trumpet solo with a touch of melancholy coupled with good changes makes it work. Nice little runs on the Trumpet solo by Birkey. "Nature Boy" fits right in with the fey feeling of this disc.Birkey gives a Poignant message. "Dreaming Of Memphis" An original by Birkey with a beautiful melody and nice lyrics. This tune moves by itself. The absence of a Drummer was not noticed. "But Not For Me" Considering Nate Birkey's affinity for Chet Baker, this tune was a must. Fine Tribute. "My Ship" Last but far from least, this song was my favorite of the ten. It swings, it's done brightly, the Bass struts along stylishly and Birkey's vocal stirs the mix that makes it simmer ever so gently.
