Electric Rosary
Living Daylights | Liquid City

Comments

Electric Rosary is an endearing new jazz-based release from Seattle denizens; saxophonist Jessica Lurie, bassist Arne Livingston and drummer Dale Fanning while special guest guitarist Bill Frisell lends his estimable talents on several tracks. Known as “Living Daylights” the band combines slick groove-inspired rhythms amid Fanning’s resilient drumming with tinges of Eastern Europe and Middle Eastern style motifs on the opener “Pike Or Pine” and other compositions. With “Get Bone-A-Fide”, Fanning implements a New Orleans shuffle beat underneath the trio’s tight unison choruses and Frisell’s funky chord progressions as Ms. Lurie states the primary theme with subtle expressionism.

Throughout, the musicians employ jazz, rock, funk, samba and odd-metered beats yet also engage in some straight up swing on the aptly titled, “Repeatable Swing”. Ms. Lurie’s feathery yet altogether fluid lines often counterbalance Frisell’s vast arsenal as the band reworks melodies via tricky time signatures and crafty improvisational maneuvers.

Overall, the musicians maintain a charismatic presence throughout these nine upbeat compositions. Perhaps hip young bands such, as “Living Daylights” will inspire those unfamiliar with jazz, to develop a keener interest in an art form that could use a little more attention!
