Breakin' Out
Dino Govoni | Whaling City Sound

By Dave Nathan
Discuss

Whaling City Sound gathered some talented players, veterans and newcomers, for this take no prisoners hard bop set. This blowing session is reminiscent of those events which regularly took place throughout the 1950's and 1960's led by the likes of Hank Mobley, Kenny Wheeler, Johnny Griffin and others responsible for building the foundation for this hard driving jazz genre. Relatively new on the scene, Dino Govoni on his debut CD ably demonstrates he is well aware of his musical lineage. Joined by monster sax man, and former Govoni teacher, George Garzone on three tracks, Govoni stakes a solid claim on the musical landscape. His fingering technique dazzles on such cuts as "(To the) Head Now!" to the point that you think that if he goes any faster, the instrument will fly right out of his hands. There is some respite from the high-flying antics as "Marie-Pierre" shows a moderate side of Govoni. This track is brightened by an imaginative bass solo by the veteran Eddie Gomez. Trumpet player John Allmark joins the front line on three cuts and is very prominent on one of four Govoni originals, "Breakin' Out". Tim Miller's strong guitar playing helps make this cut one of the more animated on the CD as Bob Gullotti drops bombs and lands haymakers throughout the track. Govoni takes his place among an illustrious group who rendered an interpretation of the classic standard, "Stella by Starlight". Saxmen such as Benny Golson, Lou Donaldson, Lee Konitz and, of course Charlie Parker, have waxed creatively with this tune. Govoni's interpretation need not take a back seat to any of his illustrious predecessors.

This guy is going to project a strong presence for a long time if this album is any indication. Recommended. Visit Dino at www.dinogovoni.com.
