Charlie Mariano’s album of straight-ahead, romantic ballads couldn’t have come at a better time. His quartet delivers a timeless message that serves as medicine for whatever ails ya.

The saxophonist has chosen eight songs deserving wider recognition in this day and age. He’s added one original, “Dew Drops,” in which the traditional spirit of Japan’s ancestors ambles ceremoniously into the room. Its effect on the listener crosses all cultural boundaries. No matter their ancestry, ceremonial priests garner the same respectful candor all over the world. Their guidance and the music’s earnest charm is exactly what the world needs now. Another original, Bob Degen’s “Etosha,” swings loosely with a dreamy quality that summarizes the obvious theme of the album.

”Deep in a Dream” purrs solemnly with melodic passion. Mariano’s alto forms a round tone that bares all. He’s got no secrets. The saxophonist improvises left and right, up and down, embellishing the song’s theme. Throughout the session, he steers his quartet along a charted course that emphasizes melody. The others share Mariano’s graceful solo form, never losing sight of each precious melody.

Several pieces are offered up with a light samba swing. Thus, Deep In A Dream carries its somber message with a lightness of spirit. Charlie Mariano proves that his early bebop career and his later world fusion career have more in common than most folks realize.
