Close To So Far
Joe LoCascio Trio | Heart Music (2002)

By Mark F. Turner Discuss

Amidst an ocean of sparkling musicians it’s refreshing to find solitaires that have an inner glow. Joe LoCascio’s accomplished voice shines through with keen light on his latest recording entitled Close to So Far. The now resident Texan with New York roots has recorded with the likes of Chet Baker, Freddie Hubbard, and Hank Crawford and is still creating music that is of the here and now. He posesses a lyrical voice on piano that swells with musical depth. His Trio which consists of John Adams on bass, and Tom Solook on drums have performed together since 1990 and the fruits of that joyous labor reveal a musical symbiosis that is unique, spontaneous, and captivating.

The music on Close to So Far is an amalgam of textures and palettes. From the bop and swing heavy title track, "Turnabout", to the quiet and mood filled "In The Quiet Of Autumn"; each selection seems to tell a story. All selections were composed by him and display the creative wheel that is constantly turning. The jazz vibe is strong with Mr. LoCascio. He swings hard on the composition "Big Motel" which is reminiscent of John Coltrane’s "Countdown". His talent on the entertaining ragtime jig "Idiot’s Delight" would make Scott Joplin smile. His prowess on the keys is dynamic but never overstated. There’s a controlled fire that's constantly in motion. Whether that motion is in full swing or delivered with delicate skill as on the peaceful beautiful solo piano piece "Catherine". The musical mood shifts are smooth and thoughtful without being melancholy. This is evident on "Purgatory Texas" which with its dark and somber theme. Bassist John Adams holds his own and delivers the backbone to the trio’s changing patterns. His solo on cut "And Her Look Touching the Air" is a work of art that’s filled with melody. Drummer Tim Solook pushes and sweeps his statesmen to new heights as he expands or contracts the rhythm to fit the need. Check out his outstanding solo on the hot title track "Close To So Far". His brushwork is impeccable and compliments LoCascio’s creative playing. Each selection is a display of many influences and paths that show a musician in complete command of his vision and art. This is again another jewel that shines bright.
