Love Letters
Joyce DiCamillo Trio | InPulse

By C. Michael Bailey
Comments

Trio con brio. The durable jazz piano trio can always be counted on to provide much enjoyment when performing well or much consternation when performing poorly. The Joyce DiCamillo trio falls into the former category, typified by a gently swinging style immediately listenable without being either predictable or overbearing. Ms. DiCamillo shows her considerable talent and range on this collection of nine standards. The centerpieces of the discs are the actual center of the disc, tracks 4 - 6. Tadd Dameron’s “If You Could See Me Now” is a gentle duet between bassist Rick Petrone with the slightest smattering of percussion by drummer Joe Corsello. Monk’s “Well, You Needn’t” bounces, with DiCamillo giving Petrone equal reign. Tom Harrell’s “Sail Away” is embraced by DiCamillo, who sensitively guides the difficult tune with care.

Preceded by two other recordings ( A Touch of Jazz and Freelancin’ ), Joyce DiCamillo scores considerably with this offering. Very easy listening without being falsely sentimental.
